Question

Vista - Bootup security delays after installing HP driver software: slow firewall start, UAC modify delay, sometimes bad or slow initial wireless connectivity

Asked by: coder1313514512456

I am running Vista on a machine which simply should not have any issues:  I recently reinstalled Vista and got my updates through Service Pack 2, I installed my OEM Trend Micro Internet Security Firewall before ever connecting it to the internet for the first time, and I like to think I'm generally savvy about network connectivity.  This machine connects wirelessly to my network with other computers in my home in which, for the sake of this post, are running just fine.  (No Active Directory; no Windows Server.)  The only difference with this machine from the others is that it is running Trend Micro for security, and the others (XP, Vista, and 7) are running the surprisingly non-bloatware Norton 09 solution.

I recently installed some HP printer driver software, and since then have really noticed issues with connectivity.  I am not sure if all my issues were there before but they're certainly here now.

After I reboot I usually get all 3 of these problems:

Issue 1:  Every time:  Windows claims I have no firewall while Trend Micro IS is starting up.  My experience is that firewalls load on boot, not on login.  The firewall certainly takes its sweet time to load.

Issue 2:  Sometimes occurs:  Wireless internet connectivity sometimes won't connect or "ghost" connects.  By ghost connecting I mean that it claims to be connected but isn't.  I can't go to a website, for example, and cycling the power on the wireless radio has no effect.  I can, however, connect via hardware ethernet just fine.  The fix to this is to bring up the wireless network connections window and then, without clicking anything, my network will be found and then automatically connect just as I had it configured.  One odd side effect of this is that sometimes it will create duplicate network profile entries.  For example, if my profile name was "my network" for some SSID "home_net", it would say it had been connected (ghost connected) to a "my network 2", but that now it was also now connected to a "my network".  I've done this enough where now I also have a "my network 2 3" (how does this kind of name get created?  Two space three?  I can't make this stuff up!) yet with the same SSID "home_net".

Issue 3:  User Account Control slow to switch on.  This may seem like a strange thing to complain about, but I don't recall turning UAC off and I noticed that the Windows Security Center complaining that it was off.  I hit the button to turn it on, and the complaint was still there, still with the same button that says to turn it on.  This was the case after hitting the on button several times.  After about ten minutes or so it said it was turned on.

That's pretty much it.  Am I silly for being so annoyed?  Do you suspect I have a virus or need to reinstall Vista?  I haven't even finished my reinstall from last time.

Did you try uninstalling the  HP drivers and doing a sytem restore rollback?

by: coder1313514512456Posted on 2009-10-08 at 12:53:12ID: 25529408

I aapologize for being unable to get to this site after asking this question which is very important to me.

And thank you centerv for the response.

I had not tried an uninstall and then a system restore rollback.  If I uninstall, what's a good way to tell when to rollback to?  I ask this because I installed a lot of software at this same time.  What about reinstalling Vista and everything else except for this printer driver, reboot, then issue the reinstall?  Is your guess that this particular install of this software had install issues?

And should I be concerned about Trend Micro not fully loading until after I login?

by: centervPosted on 2009-10-09 at 06:52:26ID: 25534940

I would try just the uninstall first, if you have that option.
Secondly, I would boot with the vista disc and try the repair option before restoring.
Third, run sfc /scannow to fix any corrupt files.
one other option if available to you is to roll back the drivers.
Lastly use sys restore
The best restore point depends on the options you're offered.
Some software makes it's own restore point which means that some doesn't.
If you've installed a lot of software, you may have a battle ahead.
Not having trend micro load fully is a definate problem.

Are you settimg up this pc from scratch?

by: coder1313514512456Posted on 2009-10-09 at 07:22:38ID: 25535251

Yeah, completely from scratch, manually, no image.  The idea here was to -create- an image after I had the machine configured properly.

I'm going to leave this open for the time being but you've offered plenty of ideas that it's essentially closed.  My latest headache is that uninstalling VS 2010 is blowing up in my face (CLR stops running with the only explanation that ngen quit).

What a mess.

Ok That being the case, let me give my quick 2 cents on how I set up an image.

Os with all updates and configurations, anivirus and all hardware with latest drivers.
Take an image snapshot at this point, one of many as you go, with notes as whats installed.
These give you the options of going back to any of them later.
Next all system utilities ie; Internet  cleaner, registry programs, codecs, qt, real and such,
configure, clean and image.
Programs, in the order of dependency.  If a program needs to send emails using the default client,
then I would want that client installed first.
Take images at any point where you may want to go back to that state.
Good luck

Haven't been on EE because I've been busy reinstalling.  Who knew that just a basic install could start having trouble after applying simple service packs?

I get the point about software dependency.  Had to reinstall more than once because I didn't do the driver order (!) properly.

Anyone have any suggestions on some good drive image software??

If that anyone is me, Acronis, choose your flavor.
My curiosity is getting the best of me.
Why are you not going with win7 which is much better and full of drivers... etc
seeing as you're doing this much work?

by: centervPosted on 2009-10-11 at 06:21:17ID: 25545824

Going out of town for a few days.
Looking forward to see how you make out.
Sounds like you have it control.
Good luck

Thanks centerv.

I'll look into it.  Essentially the reason I'm still not doing Win7 yet on this particular machine is because it's a laptop with finniky enough drivers and dare I call any tech support to anywhere for any software for any reason they use Windows 7 as a way of giving up and not even trying.  That coupled with drivers I have concerns about enough and my frustration limit is only that of a mere mortal!  So, for now Vista, and when all my major vendors start supporting Win7 (note that this may indeed be long after Win7 release) then I'll switch this one on over.

But thanks very much.  I'm getting there.  And I'm giving you all the points for this one, of course.  Anyone else could have stepped on in here and suggested something but you were here and stuck with me, thank you.

Hope you have it done and going well by now.
As an aside, I've been impressed as to how well win7 has done in the units i loaded..
Thanks and good luck.
