Browse All TopicsHi experts,
I did a very stupid thing: I deleted the verisign certificates from my FireFox. Now every time I go to sites like: www.bankofamerica.com, www.chase.com ... etc, I have to accept exceptions and go through a lot of steps. Is there a way to restore the certificate to make things back to normal? Thanks very much!

May I ask how you deleted them? As a test I just tried deleting them in Firefox 3.5.4 on Windows and I couldn't do it. It let me "delete" them but when I go back into the Certificate Manager they're still there.
Seeing as reinstalling doesn't work that might mean you can create a new profile and it will have all the certs. If that's the case you can then export them from a new profile and then re-import into your original profile.
Anyway, if I can replicate how you deleted them I can probably figure out what you need to do.
Ah, now I see what you mean.
Are you running Windows? If so try this:
1. Close Firefox
2. Go to Start->Run.. and then run the following (assuming you have Firefox installed here):
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -ProfileManager
3. Create a new profile, name it whatever you want, select that new profile, start Firefox using the new profile, then exit Firefox.
4. Open Explorer and navigate to:
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profi
In that Profiles directory there should be two directories with a bunch of random characters followed by the profile names (one is "default" and the other should be your new one). Copy the "cert8.db" file from the new profile directory into the "default" profile directory, overwriting the version in there. NOTE: this will delete any certs and/or keys you had in your old profile so if you have any of those them export/backup them before doing this.
Now restart Firefox and it should work.
On OSX use this:

/Users/your_user_name/L

While you could try to get all the CA certs and such the easiest thing you can do is just reinstall Firefox.
