The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Nasty Virus, Possible Vundo Variant

Asked by beigs in Latest Threats, HijackThis Software, Anti-Spyware

I've never met a virus I couldn't defeat until today!  I think, after some research, this maybe some kind of Vundo.OE variant, but I can't be sure.  Normally when I run into a virus/malware like this, I try to remove it manually, and then use MalwareBytes if I run into trouble, but MalwareBytes won't open on the computer, even if I rename the exe file and try it in safe mode.

I've attached a copy of the HijackThis log.  The line: "AppInit_DLLs: wepekigi.dll" is where I am running into trouble.  HijackThis throws an error if I try to remove it from there.

In safe mode, I change the file attributes and remove it, then delete all registry keys related to the file, but the registry keys come back immediately, even in safe mode, and if I reboot, the file comes back (with a different name now) and all of the registry keys are updated to match the new file name.  I've been through this five times now.

I also tried the Vundo removal programs, and all of them say nothing was found.

AVG (the full version) simply says that no viruses are found until the virus that is obviously on the computer downloads some other piece of malware.

I've checked the processes and nothing seems out of place, in safe mode or not.

Any help with this one would be greatly appreciated.
