I tried it but did not help, the funny thing is that It shows a red X on the pictures it can not display but it always a small picture half of the page loads ok and the small jpg or gif or tiff does not shows up if I don't right click on it and select show picture.

Try cleaning your TIF:

Control Panel > Internet Options > General

Click Delete files, tick Delete all offline content, OK, OK.

b) Open  IE --> tools --> internet options --> advanced and restore defaults

c) Clear all temp internet files  and cookies

d) Make IE as your default browser

What is your available percentage on resources?  Perhaps you're low on resources.  Is your resolution setting at least 800x600 or higher?

Ok Let's try to make it simple. I have all the updates, SPs, resolution 1280x1024, resources are ok.
The thing is when I got o the page www.t-mobile.com the little arrow on the left side of the screen where it says phones that little image does not display none of the arrows, it shows a red X inside a white square however when I right click on it and select show picture It shows correctel including all others pictures that were with the x thing.

I'm stuck, no idea why.  I have no problems seeing/accessing and have changed all my settings accordingly.  I have Internet Explorer as the default program to open .gif files; verified mime settings.  

When I pasted the main link into an html validator service (free), below, it had problems.  Most curious, indeed.

I was able to see all of the arrows the first access, but were all red "X" on second access attempt.  Chose View Picture on the first red arrow (right click), and all appeared without problems.  My available resources high, plenty of RAM.

When I cleared my history in IE 6, running Windows XP Pro, also all updates and revisited the page, no Red X but also no arrows; hitting CTRL+F5 server refresh properly displayed all.

My thinking is that the site coding needs work.  Do you have these problems on other sites we can sample?

Looks like we're getting close. It olny happens with gif files and I don't know how to explain but looks like is a kind of gif that is transparent like a map picture just to give the look on the background. Here's a couple sites and the respective images that did not show up.

Here's what I did, and it fixed the "intermittent" problem after all the tests run.

Searched my system for *.gif.  Chose one, highlighted it and then SHIFT+menu to choose "open with", scrolled down to Internet Explorer, chose that and also chose "always use this program to open this file type".  The default with all these iterations had reverted to XP's Picture and Fax Viewer, which may well have been the roadblock.

Closed all sessions, rebooted, tested all again and fine.

To expound, a bit misleading above, once highlighted hit the Shift key to then see the modified sub-menu and choose Open With.

IE configured in "settings" to check for newer stored pages "every visit to the page" versus automatic, which is the default.

astaec, I'm really thankfull for your help and effort but none of the above actually worked out. It still not showing up.
The only thing that I did nto understand is the settings, where is it?

Try it the drastic way:

Make sure you have downloaded the IE6 setup files first, but not loaded. Backup your Favorites folder.

Use IE Eradicator to completely delete Internet Explorer.

Does F5 or CTRL+F5 always fix the red X problem?  It should, it does for me on all the systems I've tested where I could replicate the red "X" fiasco after clearing the browser's cache or not.

Example, is this very EE page; upper right-hand corner had red "X" for the b.gif item, F5 cleared it.  I only see these problems on a select few sites.

When VIEWING SOURCE for this page, there is a lot of whitespace at the top of view source result at this screen, but see no anomoly on the b.gif item.

Sorry It did not do to me astaec, in matter efect it was selected already. The registry thing I did not try yet cause I'm kind of afraid of doing it and not doing any good.

Astaec, what It's really funny is that my wife's computer runing XP Home SPk1 works juts fine on the website www.tmobile.com and my computer It's getting worse on certain pages and I still haveing to right click on It and selection show image this is the only way right now... It's really a pain.

It is a pain, indeed.  I've not forgotten this question, just no time ... I've also asked another question, as noted above which regards the b.gif item that is a red "X" at this site.  It is now in the EE Bugs topic area awaiting insight from the site.

Again, to get you through the moment, remember to REFRESH (F5) or CTRL+F5 if the Show Pictures process is too much of a pain; it's likely to show all items in time.  Also clear your cache, temporary internet files, history, etc.

Well astaec It seams to me that It's not a issue of refreshing the page I can go to thse same site www.t-mobile.com refresh the page 5-10 times and still not showing the images I'll have to right click on It and show image. But thanks anyways for your effort you did a great job.

What are your Security Settings for Java Permissions as well as ActiveX?  Compare those to your wife's and advise, please.  I've got mine on tight security and prompt and, of course, any unsigned I've got to disabled when I was able to reproduce the problem.

If you check around, this registry edit seems to be the good answer for this problem, with a few exceptions, I must add.

jdff, you should at least try it, after backing up the registry.

Ok I did the registry thing and nothing happend, I've checked every feature from my wife's computer to compare and everthig is the same the only thing she did not have os her's was the Microsoft VM on the advanced section.

One FINAL test I did, worked to resolve the problem I could recreate as noted earlier using Windows XP Pro, IE 6 with SP1.

IN IE - tools - internet options - advanced - Microsoft VM, had Java Console unchecked during testing, reproduced the red X fiasco.  Went to the Sun Java link below to TEST Java VM:

Thanks for the update, jdff.  What is interesting to me is that on the one system where I reproduced this anomoly (red "X") on this site, in particular; it continues to be an intermittent problem.  I'm still working to understand and resolve it and have two open items at this site in that regard.  One in Windows XP and one in EE Bugs.  The only time I've seen the red "X" problem is on this site and specifically to two images; upper right-hand screen, for a b.gif image, and anywhere else that the little certification.gif image appears.  Both return a red "X" until I choose "show picture" and they're properly drawn/reflected.  I've updated this test system with the most current Sun Java VM and that is my default.

My next step will be to run the directX troubleshooter and see what I can find in that regard.

P.S.  The red "X" issue on this site is only a problem at first login (using existing cookie); once I've chosen the right-click show picture option in IE 6 SP 1, all subsequent activity properly draws/loads the b.gif and certification.gif items.  A Session issue for me.

This issue has bothered me quite a lot as a web developer, and today I decided to fix it... My current solution is to check the image's complete state, like this:

Unlike you, I only see this problem I managed to reproduce at this site, and it is only intermittent and specific to the b.gif and the certification.gif items.  I've also still got the question open in EE Bugs, and have also sent this link and my others to another Expert who "may" be able to shed some light on this problem.  I'm really befuddled (baffled), to say the least.

I keep going back to this resource, convinced the answer lies there; excerpt:
When you open a Web page, one or more pictures (graphics or images) may not be displayed. Instead, a red X, or a placeholder, may appear in place of the images.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if one of the following conditions is true:
The Web page includes an image type that is not supported by Internet Explorer.
The Show Pictures check box is not selected on the Advanced tab of the Internet Options dialog box, or the Toggle Images.exe Web accessory was used to disable images in Internet Explorer.

Yes the registry edit worked for me - however the problem on my PC not quite the same as jdff's (see below).  Also I have NO IDEA what the implications of this registry changes are!!!

I'm developing an ASP.NET application; it searches Index Server & displays a list of results.  Against each result it displays an icon (*.ICO file).  When I was testing, some of the icons where displayed as a square containing a red "x" - I could display the true icon by right clicking and selecting "Show Picture".  So it's similar to (but not quite the same as ) the problem experienced by jdff.

I'm using XP Professional with IE6 sp2.

Man, someone finally got it, It worked on my system also. Thanks to joed912 and astaec for making it possible.

FANTASTIC!  I hope to be singing that same tune soon on my test tystem.  ":0)

So far no red "X" on the test system where I replicated the environment that plaged jdff.  I'm THRILLED.  I backed up the registry and promptly rebooted after deleting the keys.  Looking good.  I think I'm missing my red "X" issues (NOT).

I had the same problem and I had an interesting hour trying to apply the tips given here, but the thing that worked for me was:

Changing the registry key:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg]
Value: "Content Type"
from ="image/jpeg"
to "image/jpg"

You may also want to check the content type values in :
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpeg] and [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif]

CAUTION: Changing the registry may cause your computer to crash completely.  Proceed with extreme care.

Interesting, CarlBormans, thanks for adding your fix here.

When I go through all my file type associations and use the right-click on any of the files, choose the Open With and navigate to my application of choice for all jpeg, jpg, gif and others, and select the Always Choose This Program to Open this file type, close reboot and test ... has always worked.  Current environment is XP Pro SP2 IE as the default of choice.

I think you need to re-install Microsoft Virtual Machine.  I had the same problem where it would work on some machines but not others and I re-installed MVM and all pages are working properly now.  MVM is getting hard to find as a result of SUN's lawsuit against Microsoft but if you do a search you should be able to find it.
