mozilla vs IE
this was brought up in the lounge or misc area before. So i installed mozilla, and i'm shocked at how slow it is.
1) pages load slower
2) can't click on link on page until it's done loading
3) links that i click on are still appearing as if i never visited the page.
so mr. CB&, what do you have to say for yourself? ^^ (speed me up)

yeah, make sure you use Firefox not the normal Mozilla
ASKER
correction, i'm running firefox by mozilla.
Well, I can't complain.
I do have a good feeling with Firefox.
:)

Try Opera .... i find that the pages load faster than in any other browser I've tried.
And it has the same features and even more features than firefox.
The email client is awesome too!

i do have to agree with phil that i've found sometimes Mozilla is a bit slow to load....but I do like the browser.
phileoca, that page does not blink in Firefox!
ok phileoca...it looks like the external javascript that is called from that page makes both Netscape and Firefox blink (this is due to the constant time changes displayed on the page). I never said that Firefox was perfect, I've just told you that Firefox has much better support for CSS than IE, and also, the two issues (visited link and clicking while loading) are not issues if you set up your Firefox browser properly.
All browsers render code differently, and none are perfect. However, Firefox is a high-quality browser.
And btw, the owner of the site you linked too ought to either detect the user's browser and force them to download IE if they dont already have it, or else first warn the user that if they are not using IE, they will see a blinking screen - crossbrowser solutions are always preferred, and if both Netscape and Mozilla are rendering the page with blinking (which they are), the designer is at fault, because he/she ought to design his/her page for all users to view properly.

brunobear...i just opened it in Firefox, and its blinking over here....and believe me, i am the biggest Firefox supporter out there! I love it. But phileoca is correct that it blinks (unless there is a patch or update I am missing which will correct the issue).
Firefox is great, but it's still too much like netscape and some pages cant be viewed :(
i use avant browser, its a beefed up IE and has tabbed pages like firefox.

thanks flow. ^^ I've only recently began to use firefox, but as more people began to use it, the hackers and crackers will began to target firefox. however, i do find that i hae to toggle between both browsers depending on what sites i want to go to.
so bruno, the page blinks for us, you got a patch/plug-in for us?

what version of Moz you on?
ASKER
firefox, latest and greatest. new download yesterday.
i have .9 at home i'll try when i get home from work
I'm not going to waste my time on this; except t point out the when a possible security threat was found in Mozilla that had patched version of all browsers ready for download in less than 24 hours. The exploit is similar to one discovered for IE over a month ago and to date MS is still trying to decide if it is serious enough to be address even though CERT considers it serious enough to advise us to not use IE.
You can find lot's of pages that don't work very well in standards compliant browsers, because IE has encouraged the use of IE only slop code that it is easy to generate form .net, Frontpage, and other MS trash generators. Page written to the standards don't have problems, and there are more IE6 support sites that get screwed up in IE5.5 than there are that get screwed up in Mozilla or even Opera.

ok the page does indeed blink in .9, but not in .8.
phil why don't you report that as a bug? :-)

Recently I stopped using IE because of its security exploits. I tried using FireFox, but it seems to be an extremely slow rendering browser. Opera seems to be a pretty good browser, but in order to get the ads to go away, one needs to pay for the program. Therefore, I looked to the original Mozilla browser. The newest version is 1.7 and it runs great! Try this phileoca and see if it doesn't do the trick for you.

pippo....you said earlier "Firefox is great, but it's still too much like netscape and some pages cant be viewed "
That is because Netscape and Mozilla are based off of the same code (Gecko). The definition of the Gecko Rendering Engine found at wikipedia.com is:
"Gecko is the name of a program module, which is used for the representation of the HTML code of a web page. Each Browser needs such a module, in order the pure HTML - to read in and CSS text files and on the screen as formatted text, diagram, to spend animation etc. (too rendern ). Gecko is open SOURCE software and can therefore by everyone be used free of charge and also adapted. The Browser Netscape navigator , Mozilla as well as the Compuserve software uses the Gecko Rendering engine."
Mozilla was first introduced to the world with the Netscape browser in 1998.
Mozilla was created as a legal entity about a year ago (july 2003), with the introduction of the Mozilla Foundation which "exists to provide organizational, legal, and financial support for the Mozilla open-source software project" (mozilla.org/foundation). This occured on the heels of the breakdown of Netscape, and with AOL opening its arms to the browser by supplying money and support for the product.

You do not need to toggle browers. You wrote
" I've only recently began to use firefox, but as more people began to use it, the hackers and crackers will began to target firefox. however, i do find that i hae to toggle between both browsers depending on what sites i want to go to."
Go to the extensions and install Launchy. You can load the link in IE directly from Firefox

bruno, i'll let you report the bug, not worth my time, but if you monetary compensation, i'd like to know.
I reported it as a bug....phileoca....what monetary compensation are you talking about?
glenn is correct - Launchy is a great extension!
"Launchy will enable you to open links and mailto's with external applications. Both browsers, media players, FTP clients and download managers are supported. That's applications like Internet Explorer, Opera, Mozilla, Outlook, BSPlayer, Windows Media Player..."
<above quote from: http://update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=81&vid=89&category=Popular - it is best to view this page in Mozilla, because its layout is weird on IE (IE is not standards compliant, and fails on certain styles).>

hey guys, i might have found another bug, althought it could just be the program language
visit this site in I.E, then with FireFox
www.phileoca.com/mainffxi.htm
Notice the way the object reacts in I.E compared to Firefox.
It's prolly just the code though. =(

i am viewing your link in Opera, IE6 and Firefox 0.8. In Opera and IE6, i do not see the image at all. In Firefox, I see it floating around the screen. What is the page "supposed" to be displaying?
ASKER
it's in image that rotates around the screen, and changes pictures.. i call it slideshow.
it works fine on my I.E. 6
it works fine on my I.E. 6
I just tried it again in IE6 and i dont see the slideshow at all. Nor on Opera.
The IE i am using is: Version: 6.0.2600.0000.xpclnt_qfe.0 10827-1803
I have all scripting allowed....it shouldnt be an issue....very weird. The slideshow works fiine in Mozilla, other than that the image sometimes floats off the screen.

btw, how are you assigning points for this thread? I think I was the one who assessed and worked on your 3 issues from the original post (see my first post - 6th from the top).
Thanks phileoca! Hope you keep using Firefox, and developing in a web standards compliant manner....
validator.w3.org is a great way to test whether your code is valid HTML, XHTML, XML, etc....you can also use http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/ to validate your css. GOod luck!

Have you tried Firefox?

I'm testing it and I'm finding it to be quite nice.
Still needing a "polish" here and there, but good enough for me to keep on using it.
