The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

A runtime error has occurred.  Do you wish to debug?

Zone: Web Browsers
Tags: error, runtime, has, you, do
I am running XP and IE6.0 on a Dell Laptop.  Both came installed.  Everything worked fine and I may have done an upgrade to IE, but I’m not sure.  At some point in the last month or so, I started getting what appear to be scripting errors.  These occurred on a number of sites and the most reliable one that showed at least one error every time I visited it was

http://football.espn.go.com/nfl/index

The error takes the form of a dialog box:  “A runtime error has occurred.  Do you wish to debug?”  It references a line and a particular error, gives yes/no boxes and asks if I want to debug. If I answer “yes”, I get the following error and my machine hangs:

“An exception ‘Runtime Error’ has occurred in Script.

However, no debuggers are registered that can debug this exception.  Unable to JIT debug.”

I often get as many as three of these on one page.  As a specific example, the given URL today gave two errors:

Line: 10
Error:  Access is denied.

Line: 59
Error:  ‘pl’ is undefined

I have “repaired” my OS installation twice on the advice of my OEM, which did not help.  At some point, I also upgraded IE and added whatever current security fixes there were available and this also did not help.  However, at some point in the process the format of the errors changed.  What I’ve listed is what it does now, but previously I got a larger dialog box saying that an error had occurred and asking me if I wanted to continue running the script.

Any ideas?

Peter

>> I have “repaired” my OS installation twice on the advice of my OEM

im surprised by this,,,,, coz these type of errors can mostly fixed by IE Repairing !!!

Repair or Reinstall Internet Explorer in Windows XP:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_ie6.htm
(First run the SFC scan, and then reinstall using ie.inf method)

if still no luck, then try running this tool:

OK, that got the errors back to the previous format, but I’m still getting them.  Now I get a much larger dialog box with a Window Title of “Internet Explorer Script Error”.  The contents of the window are the same Line number plus 1, the same error message and a code of 0, a URL of http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/util/getSidebarLogin and a char of 1.

Have you tried deleting the cookies you have for this site, clearing your cache and temporary internet files including offline content, closing IE, resetting to default and trying again?

Also, be sure that you go to WindowsUpdate and install any pertinent fixes for the Operating System as well as for IE.

Sorry for the fragmented input; one more thought.
start-run-msconfig  and see if mdm.exe is running at startup in the startup tab; if so, uncheck it and reboot to test.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the helpful suggestions.  Unfortunately, it looks like this was caused by a varient of the Backdoor.Nibu virus and I spent the last three days wiping my network.  At least this problem is gone now,

Peter

I'm so pleased you isolated the cause and fixed the problem.

There are two variants of that, I believe, and this may add some insight if further or residual issues arise again.
