Lightsaber Effect

How can you make a lightsaber effect in Photoshop? Here is an example of what I'm talking about:

http://www.geocities.com/tekken_4_life/tzmembers/nagasadow1.jpg (you might have to copy and paste the URL in a new window in order to the see image)

If I could get a detailed explanation, or just get referred to an online manual, that would be OK. I use version 6.0.1.

armor_king :) did u follow ? what weed said is absolutely right. Lightsabre is nothing but a simple layer effect called outer Glow.

If u really dont know how to add effects to the layer see this.
Pls be in the The Layer in which u want the outer glow.I assume ur black ground is almost nearer to black as thats the best way to see an effect like this.
So now u are in the layer where u want the effect.

Just go to layer > Layer Style > OuterGlow and click

U will get a Pop Up WIndow about the different parameters like opacity color size etc etc etc. U just select a color to the glow. I think it will be cream as default. U can select what ever color u need then adjust the size spread etc etc etc , according to ur requirement.and OK
In case u need to make further changes come back to the same place by the same way u came thefirst time.

Hope ur not confused.
Cheers

I guess im going to nail this one down. Answer is as above. It's just an outer glow.

If you really want it to look like Star Wars, this example is not quite up to par.  The guy standing there doesnt look like he's in the same universe as the saber.

I definitely recommend copy a part of the red saber, placing it smaller, gaussian blurring it a bit, lowering the opacity to 35% or so and making it look like there is a reflection on the glass behind him or on the objects in the vicinity.  A faint red glow on his face would be nice also.

Shadow bolt is pretty on point with his answer.
No comment has been added lately, so it's time to clean up this TA.
I will leave a recommendation in the Cleanup topic area that this question is:
SPLIT POINTS: WEED AND SHADOWBOLT

Just thought (even though this is closed) that if you go to http://www.fanfilms.com there is a big tutorial section on how to create a variety of star wars related effects in different programs.  Look around...
Edit: Site changed, tutorial section is now at: http://theforce.net/fanfilms/software/
yes you can!
by selecting the blades of the lightsaber (the white parts) and moving them on to their own layer, keep the selection and make a new layer under the white ones and go to Select -> Modifiy -> Expand by 1 Pixel and fill it with the color you desire for the blade (red, green, blue, yellow, purple, whatever!)
no deselect and go to Filters -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur and adjust the settings as you see fit.
sometimes duplicating the bloom layer (the blurred color) so you have 2 on top of each other adds to the effect if you adjust them properly :)

good luck!
