The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

How to convert MPG-files to DVD or VCD
Tags: dvd, mpg, convert, files
I have made 3 hours of home VHS movie and want to burn it on DVD or maybe on VCD.
I have put the VHS video on the hard disk through my TV card (Medion TV Tuner 7134). It makes MPG files of 2 GB each (11 GB in total).
Nero burner does not support MPG-files so I need a program to convert to another file format, it could be AVI or MPEG2. I have tried TMPGEnc, but it doesn't work because MPG is not supported. I have also tried Windows Movie Maker and it worked but the quality was poor - it was reduced to 500 MB only!
Hope somebody can help - thank you.

Mac? PC? What sort of software do you have available? If on a Mac do you have the built in DVD burner? iDVD? That'll do the whole thing for you automatically when you burn it.

how do you plan to read your video back ?
- if you need standalone playback on home dvd/vcd player,
you'll have to go the (s)vcd way (unless you own one of these awesome kiss dvd/divx player)

follow the guide at : http://www.doom9.org/mpg/svcd-guides.htm

if playing from a PC is ok, you should use divx (or XVID) codec.

for the transcoding stuff, try virtual dub, it's a great free tool for video editing / transcoding / filtering
http://www.virtualdub.org/
you should even use it to drive the video capture process.

you can grab all the codecs you need by installing gordian knot system package
http://gknot.doom9.org/Software/GordianKnot.SystemPack.1.0.Setup.exe

If he burns it onto a DVD he doesn't need to bother with VCD/SVCD.

And i dont know why people keep suggesting DivX or its myriad of variants. That stuff is terrible.

06.10.2003 at 11:50AM PDT, ID: 8693473
DivX IS MPEG.  DivX will allow you to put about an hour of high quality video on a 700mb CD.  DivX is much smaller than MPEG2 or MPEG4, an hour long DivX will be about 700mb.  An hour long MPEG4 will be about 1.2gb.  The numbers are not exact, I'm guessing DivX is about 2/3 the size of MPEG4.  SVCDs and VCDs play in CD players and not just DVD players (on computers).  SVCDs and VCDs will also play in home DVD players.

Choose a codec that will work on home DVD players if that is your intention.  Some newer DVD players will work with DivX (most I've tried) and all DVD players will work with MPEG2 Codec (thatÂ’s what is on commercial DVDs) if you have a choice use Mpeg layer 3 audio for your audio, it will work on all DVD players.   If you plan on using your SVCD-DVD-VCD on a home DVD player, consider getting a cheap one you can test it on before you produce your CD/DVD.

This is the software I use to master/write SVCDs/VCDs/DLT/DVD

http://www.gearsoftware.com/products/mastering/index.cfm

It's costs enough all right, but you can use the trial for 30 days I think.

-Coolhand2120

p.s. what makes DivX so bad weed?  Give me some real examples; don't just say "it sucks"

Rank: Guru

DivX is NOT MPEG (im sure the MPEG consortium would agree). DivX, MSMPEG-4 (both versions), etc are all based off a very early development of the ISO MPEG-4. They diverged from MPEG-4 before the MPEG consortium decided to base the file format off QuickTime instead of AVI. They are VERY different. As time passed they diverged even farther, and various other offshoots developed from DivX. DivX:), XviD, 3ivX, etc etc. The family tree for those offshoots looks like a bloody oak. And now theyve diverged to such a degree, and there are so many versions of DivX, not to mention its offspring, that half of them arent even compatible with eachother. It's a nightmare. That's its BIGGEST problem at the moment.

To say that an hour long DivX is smaller than an hour long MPEG-4 is misleading. The size COMPLETELY depends on the bitrate used. At the same bitrate, they will be the same size. It's the same for AAC and MP3. Theyre the same size at the same bitrate. The difference is in the quality. I just re-ran a test between ISO MPEG-4 and 3ivX D4 and theyre virtually identical (i even let the 3ivX encoding use VBR but used constant bitrate for the MPEG-4). The difference is that if send the 3ivX D4 version off to someone who doesnt have the 3ivX codec, theyre not going to see squat. You wouldnt believe how many times we see questions at EE that read "I just downloaded a video but only the audio plays" or "I just downloaded a video and it says i dont have the correct codec installed". In ALL cases so far it's been a video encoded with one of the zillion *ivx codecs and its a royal pain for them to figure out which one was used, or which one they need.

This is all of course aside from the fact that the *ivx family is a constantly evolving beast. Everyone thinks they can do it better and so a new child is born, and a new codec nightmare arises. There is no organization, nobody making sure theyre all compatible, nobody running quality control. Disaster. There is no reason to use it when there is a standard with quality that is just as good.

Hello,

This are three main issues with movie conversion either from VHS to DVD, VHS to VCD or DVD to VCD, and they are
Capturing
Converting
and Editing

Now if you movie is on a viewcam you can connect that to your computer using an S Video Cable and caputure using XP movie maker or any other software, if not you can use a video caputre card to caputre the movie..

Later than, use an encoder to encode the raw AVI file, to convert that into MPEG-1 for VCD and MPEG-2 for SVCD or DVD

And than finally edit the main converted movie and burn it into a CD or DVD using a burner. Nero express and other CD burning software has options to convert MPG files to VCD format...

Hope this helps ! ! ! !

06.12.2003 at 03:41AM PDT, ID: 8707402
is you use NERO to burn your disk, it will convert it to the required MPEG format for you on the fly.

otherwise, there are plenty of shareware programs on the net for you.

06.12.2003 at 11:27AM PDT, ID: 8711339
There is no conversion in nero or any other program (that I know of) when burning a SVCD/VCD/DVD.  It creates the directory structure your DVD player expects and throws your MPEG file in the proper directory with the proper name.  It does not, however, change any codecs.

You must choose the codec when you encode the file, not when you burn the SVCD/VCD/DVD.

-weed
"There is no reason to use it when there is a standard with quality that is just as good."

How about it's free, compare that to the price of MPEG4 codec.  If you find a divx codec that works in your DVD player I say fly with it.   Sure you have to download a codec to make it work, I think all codecs work that way.  And like weed says the free Divx is "just as good" as MPEG4.  (it's not really, but  I don't want to start it again with weed)

blimey...you'd better come round and fix my PC then because when i put a few clips together for a VCD with nero  the other day, it sat there for about 5 hours with a progress bar saying "Encoding Video" and THEN burned the disk as normal.

one clip was a .MOV , one was an AVI ...cant remember the rest off hand...

oh well

guess it must be broken again eh?

Coolhand: standards, standards, standards. Even if you have to pay for it you're better off with a standard. It's LOADS easier to work with and distribute.

signet: 5 hours sounds a bit extreme..There are probably faster encoders around you could use.

06.15.2003 at 11:35AM PDT, ID: 8727601
Henrik - if you are having problems getting compliant files with TMPGEnc, then it would appear that you have some problem with your system. Try again using the default settings for VCD, and let us know what the exact error message is.

TMPEnc will give you fully compliant VCD mpgs using the default settings (just follow the wizard).

I use adaptec to create VCD's (well I did until my writer died earlier this week), and have had no major problems using TMPGEnc as the encoder, and burning the encoded files.

d-signet 5 hours is a very long time (nero is not that good at encoding). Use TMPGEnc - no re-encoding should be necessary - on my machine (Athlon XP1800) encoding is better than realtime.

Coolhand - DivX is a bastardised form of mpeg4 - not read by many standalone dvd boxes (too many versions of divx about to be worth including in the onboard firmware)

MPG is an old extension usually used with MPEG1, if so virtualdub should be able to use it.
With virtualdub you can encode the data to any type of AVI.

3 hours/11 GB  is alot of data. VHS quality is far from DVD and resolution of CIF (352x288) sould be enough, if the audio was captured in stereo then MP3 96Kbits is enough.

I'd recommend using 2pass xvid, It's 100% MPEG4 compliant. Standalone players that support MPEG4 emerge every day (almost).

All the applications are free and the guids are at www.doom9.org

use  a bitrate calculator to get the desired avi file size for a DVD or several CD's the bitrates differ.

Warning : In order to get good results, you'll need alot of patience especially if it's your first heavy encode.

weed - Xvid/Divx/3vix/Divx;)/MS-MPEG4v3 are all better then QT :)

Rank: Guru

Uhhh errrr...heh....That's like saying DivX is better than AVI. QT is a container format JUST like AVI only much more advanced/current. QT is not a codec. You're comparing apples to oranges when you compare a file format to a codec. The ISO MPEG-4 file format is based on the QuickTime file format but that doesn't mean that it's QuickTime.

Nero works fine for me! I use the SuperVCD mode if your DVD player supports it
but if your mpg file not mpeg well you need to convert using TMPGEnc or VirtualDub if you need experts of enconders join Filetopia it's chat based client many channles on there and very helpful with this kinda matters
Cheers :)

TMPGEnc, load the VCD, SVCD, DVD setting profile for your tele-type (PAL or NTSC) and crunch the movie.

Take the resulting MPG and save as seperate streams (audio & video using the MPEG tools built into TMPGEnc)

these can be used by any dvd authoring software to create a DVD.

you can skip the demuxing (splitting step) if you are simply wanting a VCD. Those you can burn directly to a CD and your DVD player will play them.

BTW- the newest TMPEnc supports all video file types

good luck,

MPG = VCD format, just burn it in Neroburner as VCD. Very simple.

I got the later with my video capture card. Both are not so expensive and work great. Ofcourse for more pro editing use Adobe After Effects but it costs more.
