The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Lotus Domino Designer 6 Tutorial

Tags: lotus, domino, tutorial, designer
Hi,

I currently work for a company as a web designer/web programmer. I was recently asked to start learning/working with Domino Designer 6.5. Does anyone know where to get some beginner tutorials on how to use this program? In specific I want to create a custom company wide welcome page. Also, I would like to learn how to create applications with this program. Some ideas which are being tossed around are electronic timesheets (through Lotus Notes), and document retrieval. We basically want to create a company intranet through Lotus Notes. Please advise. Thank you.

There are lot(u)s of products available for Notes/Domino suitable for website creation, so don't reinvent the wheel (although it's fun). All documentation can be found at http://www-136.ibm.com/developerworks/lotus/products/notesdomino/ see tutorials

Hi,

What I'm looking for the following information:

A tutorial which explains how to use Domino Designer 6/How to customize the welcome page
A tutorial which explains how to create applications (for my timesheet project).

Any ideas?  I can't seem to find anything on Lotus's site.

Did you follow the URL above? And then you clicked on Tutorials under Learning Resources? There is a document called Building Web services using Lotus Domino 6, http://www6.software.ibm.com/reg/devworks/dw-lsdom6ws-i?S_TACT=104AHW18&S_CMP=EDU .Other information can be found via the same URL as above, it's all there. As a matter of fact, did you know there are lengthy trainings on Notes and Domino?

Customizing the welcome page? In the browser I assume? You'd have to create a Notes database, fill it with forms, so you can install it in the server document as default URL. It's described in one sentence now, but you need a whole lot more! Building a website from scratch without any Notes knowledge within a week requires a superhuman effort. What's your background, are you a Notes user already?

With "products" I meant: ready-made Notes databases suitable for website creation, with a lot of standard stuff and sometimes workflow capabilities. Do you want an example of such a website?

Hi,

I have experience creating web pages/web applications.  I have never used Domino Designer before.  All I really want to do is customize the welcome page (for Notes Client and iNotes users) so it has our company logo, colors, etc.  I have done this.  I also want to add some forms for document retrieval, timesheets submission, and IS requests.  I'm not really sure how to start programming this, and need a tutorial.  Can you provide some examples of the ready-made Notes databases?

I'm sorry if I sounded a bit patronizing or so, it's never intended. I just wanted to get things clear to be able to get you the advice you need. I'm so saint, but luckily there are many experts around in this TA, so don't worry.

Developing a Domino-website is a whole different ballgame. Domino will generate a lot of HTML for you, you have to bear that in mind. All you have to do is "fill in the gaps" and writing HTML is not required for a simple website. You absolutely need Domino Designer experience, building ordinary Notes databases.

I cannot give you a complete example, I don't have one, because if I build a website, I use a Domino-based product in which you get a lot of nice extensions (e.g. navigation bars) and website management is done using the Notes client, with all the usual document maintenance rights applicable to a Notes database. Domino contains a lot of features to create a web-enabled database, but the design has to be created or adapted by someone with Designer rights who also knows how the Domino Designer works. There are Framesets, Frames, Pages and Forms that can be defined, and lots of other stuff, far too much for me to explain here.

If you need an example: there used to be 3 or 4 web-enabled databases (websites) supplied with Notes R4, maybe also with R5. I haven't a clue whether they still exist in R6 (we used to delete those files immediately after installing a new client or server. You might check the installation CD or your server if those files still exist. Maybe someone else here knows about a website example database?

Notes cliennt and iNotes use completely different welcome pages.  There is limited ability to customize iNotes -- all theinfo on that is contained in a pair redbooks.  The more basic one is http://publib-b.boulder.ibm.com/Redbooks.nsf/RedbookAbstracts/sg246518.html?Open

The Notes client welcome page comes from a local file, bookmark.nsf.  There are a whole host of issues around deploying new welcome pages.  You really need to look at the ADMINISTRATION documentation first, then look at how to customize the design elements involved.
