Writing a browser add-in (or is it a plugin)

I would be interested to write an add-in (or plugin) in IE and NS. Much like the Adobe Acrobat plugin or Flash.
The task is to check for presence of certain components on the client and depending on that perform a certain action.

I am not sure how to get started. Can anyone point me to to some sample applications or source snippets? Source examples in VB6, VB.NET appreciated.

OTOH what is the correct term? Plugin or addin?
or is it just Netscape & MS terms for the same thing?

Thanks for all responses!

ASKER

I would award max points to anyone who offered me the best sample source.  I am a thru and thru programmer and like to look and understand clear and concise source-code better than reams of docs.

Thanks

There is no specific name for it...Netscape calls it an add-in, while Internet Explorer calls it a Browser Helper Object (BHO) so just use the name that suits you best.

The links cheekycj gave you should get you started.

Max.
