The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

DO I JUST WAIT? WHERE DO I SEE RESPONSES?

Hello EFOUCHIA,

There are some good website making softwares. Since, your requirements are more, you cannot depend on one software. Adding blogs, user uploding pictures & Audios can be done only through some scripting languages. You should do lot more to develop such a website. Unless you gain more knowledge in these area, you cannot maintain the site by yourself.

Hi EFOUCHIA,

First, you shouldn't shout here. From your posting, you're presumably a competent web site designer, so you're aware that it is a very bad idea to put your text in all uppercase since it's actually difficult to read: exactly the same applies here. Push your Caps Lock key, and your posting will be answered much more quickly.

I'd suggest using one of the less complex applications, such as IBM's Homepage Builder, but as the last poster pointed out, ther are many alternatives. Here's a comparison of some of the commercial offerings: http://website-creation-software-review.toptenreviews.com/, but there are also plenty of free products too. You can find them using Google - here are a few: http://info.soholaunch.com/index.php?pr=Comparison_Chart

The down side of all of this is that your requirements are for a rather sophisticated site. The functionality you require is pretty advanced, and does require substantial use of Javascript and the backend language (probably C# if you're planning to run on .Net, or Java for J2EE). You'll also need a database to store youre membership details, and you'l need some security to prevent any one from accessing personal details. You even mention Flash, which is another tool you'll have to master. All in all, this is not a site that can be maintained by someone who is not well-versed in the art of web development.

Microsoft Frontpage is a good start and its cost is not that much.  Works great for me.

If you're wanting Flash, you may be best off with the Macromedia development suite, since it includes Dreamweaver and Flash.  You have a steep learning curve to learn the programming languages you need to create a site.  I would echo bpmurray's comments that it is best to start simple and then add things in as your skills progress.  I also recommend you avoid a WYSIWYG package like Frontpage.  It's fast but is limited and the ease of use keeps you from seeing the code that's being created.  My .02.

I'm with KenAdney: use the Adobe/Macromedia suite...

You're rather ambitious. You need to learn quite a bit about programming, databases, and website security before you even start thinking about a site like the one you've described. Then you're going to have to start thinking about bandwidth and redundancy; Experts Exchange uses something like eight different webservers and an Oracle database, plus the notifications server... so you'd better have a lot of oomph behind that credit card.

www.adobe.com/products/dreamweaver/
http://www.microsoft.com/Frontpage/

Both use WYSIWYG editors so that you don't have to deal with HTML or CSS code, and offer automation tools that would handle user registration and other interaction requirements.

Both also offer free trials.

FWIW: Re: "MIX BETWEEN MYSPACE AND UTUBE"

Both of those sites required dozens of skilled web developers and programmers to achieve their functionality.

Some might even say they "pushed the envelope" of web design. There is simply no substitute for learning some aspects of web development.  None of the suggestions so far will allow you to wave a magic wand and achieve the mix of functionality you desire.

Rod

Looks like EFOUCHIA has not logged in to EE for a very long time.  This is his/her first and last question.  After that he neither asked any question nor answered any question.

Hi EFOUCHIA

I think you must use Macromedia Flash, with this software you can create very smart web sites without writing any code
Maybe he can log in and can see my comment :)

@keslan,

While Flash is certainly ubiquitous and is another alternative, not all people can use Flash in their browsers.  They just released a player for some versions of Linux and of course people with vision problems will get little value from that.  Still, most visitors will have the Flash plugin.  But without some knowlege of HTML and JavaScript for detection purposes you do run the risk of this: http://www.rodsdot.com/ee/unuseable.asp

There are also some security issues with the Flash plugin, for example: http://www.hardened-php.net/library/poking_new_holes_with_flash_crossdomain_policy_files.html which combined with Googles new code search gives a malicious person a limitless supply of vectors. Not that there are not security issues with JS and browsers as well.

I think all web development tools require the person using them to learn how to use the technology and some fundamentals about the underlying structure of a web site.

"...learn how to use the technology and some fundamentals about the underlying structure of a web site..."

Especially if that person plans on building a site to complete with two of the top nine websites. I figure that if the asker has only posted his question above, and hasn't responded, that he has gone on to other pursuits, like the junior prom...

Hi rdivilbis,

The reason why i offer flash is the question, in his question EFOUCHIA said
"WHAT IS THE BEST WEBSITE MAKING SOFTWARE. I WANT TO CREATE, PUBLISH AND MAINTAIN THE SITE ON MY OWN. I CANNOT WRITE CODE AND FIND UNDERSTANDING FTP TOUGH. I AM ARTISTIC AND ARTICULATE AND A STICKLER TO MY OWN AD COPY, LOOK AND FEEL, SO I NEED SIMPLE EASY TO OPERATE WEB DESIGN FEATURES AND PUBLISHING FEATURES. WANT TO PUBLISH SITE IN HRS. so first of all being a beginner he can start with flas easily make and upload a web site than he can do the things that you say i think.

Hi Efouchia,

Some alternatives...

More Motion Web Express:
http://www.download.com/MoreMotion-Web-Express/3000-2048_4-10487426.html?tag=lst-0-7

Web Weaver:
http://www.download.com/Web-Weaver-EZ/3000-2048_4-10402942.html?tag=lst-0-5

Namo Web Editor:
http://www.download.com/Namo-WebEditor/3000-2048_4-10434941.html?tag=lst-0-4

These are WYSIWYG editors, so are good for people who are:

A) beginners
B) want to develop something visually rather than through the use of code
C) want to develop something quickly

Hope these help!

EFOUCHIA,
This question has been classified as abandoned.  I will make a recommendation to the moderators on its resolution in approximately one week.  I would appreciate any comments by the experts that would help me in making a recommendation.

It is assumed that any participant not responding to this request is no longer interested in its final disposition.

If the asker does not know how to close the question, the options are here:

Hello mrichmon,

When we see the asker's profile it shows that he has asked only one question and that is the only comment he has posted so probably he has forgotten about this. So, we can go ahead with split points.

>>I see no value to the PAQ to this question<<
I agree, but is it all about the PAQ? What about the people that offered good advise?

I recommend PAQ to distribute the points. Then delete it if you may.

12.02.2006 at 10:05AM PST, ID: 18060339
There's no system for distributing the points and then deleting the question; they can do one or the other. If mrichmon decides to recommend a split, I'm not going to object -- but I don't think the system was designed as a mechanism to hand out points just because we took the time to respond. She asked for our opinions; I think this is a worthless question.

12.02.2006 at 10:38AM PST, ID: 18060419
>>I don't think the system was designed as a mechanism to hand out points just because we took the time to respond.<<
I don't think so either. I think the system was designed as a Q&A mechanism. In that respect, this question has been answered and the points should be split. Was it a good question? I wouldn't say so, but it has little to do with the fact that it got answers.

Is it a good addition to the PAQ? I wouldn't say so either, but again my point is that the quality of the PAQ is not part of the equation in this scenario in which a question was asked and it got valid replies. IMO, if the quality of the PAQ is a priority when finalizing questions then we would have to delete 85% of all the new questions asked everyday.

I will leave the following recommendation for this question in the Cleanup topic area:
   Split: cyberwebservice {http:#17261519} & bpmurray {http:#17270538} & aumandg {http:#17274965} & KenAdney {http:#17281762} & ericpete {http:#17426448} & Esopo {http:#17548948} & rdivilbiss {http:#17557555}

Any objections should be posted here in the next 4 days. After that time, the question will be closed.
