All my html pages has a common header so I want to know how to include a html file as header in all my html documents. When I want to update header, i just need to update one file only.

You would need to use some javascript for this, if a pure html solution is needed.

The js could write the header part of the page using document.write and you could call this js wherever the header need to be in each page.
The same cane be done for footer, left menu, etc so that by changing just these js files the look of the site will change.

Using JS for something like this would be horrid to try and maintain, plus it wouldn't work in browsers that don't support scripting.

A serverside include would be the best solution. SSIs are not difficult to implement, but exact syntax depends on the server. What does your site run serverwise and languagewise?

Also, you could use XML data islands as external file while using JavaScript to access them and like fozylet's comment, worse to worst cases, using document.write() from an external JavaScript file to write contents dynamically on the page.
here's a snipplet:

on the header or anywhere as an example:

rename the HTML file your working on..........or rather copy it first and rename the copy whateverthepagenameis.php
and put the below coding wherever you want the page to be included at
For example to show it at the top put the coding at the very top.........above all your HTML

This is yet another case on EE where the accepted answer is (sadly) not the best one. The best solutions are either to use PHP (as suggested by zanus123), or to use SSI (as suggested by gam3r_3xtr3m3 and others).

JavaScript is best reserved for scripting, and not includes, since JS is inefficient (each line includes a 'document.write("' preceding and '")' following), and since it is possible to disable JavaScript. Few users do it, but it's possible. Use JavaScript only where there's not a better solution. In this case, PHP and SSI are both simpler.

Some PHP servers may require you to specify the full address:
<?php include('http://mydomain.com/inc/header.txt'); ?>

If you're using FrontPage Extensions, there's yet another way to do includes. Check your FrontPage help file. (I recommend against using FrontPage, but if you are...)
