The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Are you sure you need the GD library for your image gallery?
GD is usefull if you want to create, modify... some images.

Assuming you are on a *nix based OS, you will need to configure, make, and make install the gd library.

Before GD will compile, you will also need the jpeg, tif, and png libraries installed. These are usally already installed on common linux systems.

Once GD is installed, you will need to recompile PHP with the '--with-gd=/path/to/where/you/put/gd'

If you recompiled PHP properly, and have restarted the webserver a quick phpinfo() should show if there is a gd section now.

Consult the gd website for more detailed instructions on installing the libraries.

If you messing with images, you should really use GD2.
This provides all the functions of GD plus you have the capability of true colour images. Useful for resizing photographs.

ImageMagick may be useful to you further down the line, as it can do a heck of a lot more than GD.

Please state OS, PHP version and type of http server you are using.

change to the source directory and type ./configure
then when that finishes (2 minutes) type make
then, type make install
you're done!

If you are using a LINUX system and you are a complete newbie, the best thing would be to use an RPM. These were developed by RedHat to be almost like a windows-ish program installation. There are simply a file, which you run a command against...and they install.

Since LINUX is founded on inter-connecting modules, your machine might need some other modules before GD will work. But this is all taken care of (well the checking is) by the RPM (RedHat Package Manager). It goes through the dependencies of the package, and checks your system has that module. If not, it will tell you.

You can find just about any RPM you need at www.rpmfind.net
As a starter if you have RedHat 8.0:

ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/redhat/8.0/en/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS/gd-1.8.4-9.i386.rpm

Or for Redhat 7.3:

ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/redhat/7.3/en/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS/gd-1.8.4-4.i386.rpm

Or for RedHat 7.2:

ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/redhat/7.3/en/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS/gd-1.8.4-4.i386.rpm

Hope this helps!
