Wordpress: How to Remove "category" Folder from the Permalinks URL

I've installed Wordpress on my server, so it's my own domain.  

Does anyone know how to remove the "category" folder from being inserted into the Permalink URL when you click on a Category link on one of my Wordpress pages?

So instead of this, where Tech Tips is the category:  
      http://www.MyBlogDomain.com/category/tech-tips/

I'd like to see only this:
      http://www.MyBlogDomain.com/tech-tips/

I know there is an option in the Dashboard settings to change the word "category" to something else.  But I want to remove it altogether.

Go to your admin panel, Options, Permalinks and delete whatever is in Category Base.

wonkotsane, thanks for your suggestion.  However, it's not that simple.

That page says: "If you leave this blank the default will be used."

The default happens to be "category".  I don't want the default or any string to be used.  I need to know where that "default" happens to be assigned.  Probably in the core code somewhere.

Is there a plugin that will remove the default_category='category' ?

Simple solution

In the wp-includes/rewrite.php file, you'll see the code: *search for the following line:

$this->category_structure = $this->front . 'category/';

Now just remove the "category" from the string, and the code should look like:

$this->category_structure = $this->front . '/';

thats all. Enjoy!

Great suggestion.  However, it doesn't quite work for me. Did it actually work on your system?  

The permalink looks good but there is a 404 error now when I go to those category links.

Perhaps the database needs to be aware of the change.  It doesn't work for new categories, created after the modification, either.

(BTW) The forward slash needs to be removed completely or there are two slashes in the permalink.

The solutions is incomplete, but it does point to the location in the code where the change must occur.

Thank you for your suggestion.  I appreciate learning where the code for the global variable seeting was.  There must be another element to it since the Categories do not display properly when the change is activated on the site.
