Question

Use shortcode within PHP file

Asked by: jonathen

Hi experts,

I am using a Wordpress plugin and would like to call it on the main page (the blog page). But of course this page is not accessible for editing within the Wordpress admin, so I can only edit the actual php file. However, adding the short code to this file will of course not work, and simply display as plain text. So how can I trick the php file to view the shortcode as Wordpress would?

Thanks

Jon

which wordpress plugin are you using? Do you have access to your theme files?

by: jonathenPosted on 2009-03-28 at 04:15:21ID: 24007972

nextgen-smooth-gallery (a plugin that adds features to the nextgen gallery plugin). Yes, I have access to all source files. I have tried using:

<?php echo do_shortcode('[smooth id="3"]'); ?>

...as the shortcode is "smooth" and do_shortcode should allow you to use shortcode within a PHP file, but it doesn't work for this plugin.

Yes I see the problem

You need to create a function in functions.php file which supports the shortcode for this plugin you are using. Sample is available at

http://codex.wordpress.org/Shortcode_API

Okay, that makes sense. Not really sure where to start though - any help? Thanks!

Can you upload your theme somewhere in one zip file. Also where from I can download the plugin you are using. This would help me quickly fix the issue.

Yes, that is the right plugin.

I don't see the point of uploading the whole theme, as all the files that will be affected (functions.php, banner.php and index.php) are already on this page. I understand I need to create a function to enable the shortcode for this plugin, but as I'm new to Wordpress and PHP, I don't really know how to write the function for this.

Thanks.

OK

OK

I was trying to help quickly

On Line # 9 in banner.php, just replace the whole (including php start/end markers)

<?php echo do_shortcode('[smooth=id:3]'); ?>

with this code

[smoothgallery id=3]

and let me know what happens. I hope it will solve your problem.

More help is at http://www.christianschenk.org/projects/wordpress-smoothgallery-plugin/

<?php //echo do_shortcode('[smooth=id:3]'); ?>
// Add this following
[smoothgallery id=3]

That simply echoes [smoothgallery id=3] on the page as plain text (the same as the smooth tag does).

Yes that wont work in simple php content as its not the content generated by the wordpress, rather its plain PHP. So shortcode is not an option here. You will have to use the simple php function call for smoothgallery.

by: jonathenPosted on 2009-03-28 at 06:50:08ID: 24008493

Ok, so what is this function call? Could you please provide me with an example? Thanks.

by: jonathenPosted on 2009-03-28 at 10:56:28ID: 24009448

Ummm, thanks but...that's relevant only to the smoothgallery plugin itself, not for the version that is designed for NextGen - therefore, neither config.php that the article refers to nor the function called insertSmoothGallery() exist. The plugin I have is from here:

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/nextgen-smooth-gallery/

by: jonathenPosted on 2009-03-28 at 18:00:59ID: 24010963

Well, I've given up on that plugin and instead used the slideshow option for NextGen gallery, which I've now enabled. Thanks for trying to help anyway.
