Question

Installing Wordpress and WAMP Server

Asked by: mtzsw

I have downloaded WAMP Server 2.0, which includes Apache Server, PHP, and mySQL that was highly recommended to me.

I FTP my wordpress site that is hosted by GoDaddy.  I put the site inside the WAMP Server WWW directory.  I verified that all of my website files are there by opening couple of files .PHP in my notepad ++.

My question is, if I want to test my site do I have to download wordpress?  I would like to work on my website locally as trial and error as I am not an expert in development.  I just want to test everything locally before I transfer it to the hosted site.

Do I need to make any configurations to the WAMP Server for my website to work?  Is there any modification or I have to download Wordpress for my website to work localy.

any other resources in reference to WAMP Server.

I did what you are trying to do.

The way I did it was to run a fresh install of wordpress on my local computer.   I use XAMPP and it has phpMyAdmin which makes it easy to create a quick MySQL database.  Mabye WAMP has it too.

Then I instaledl the plugins I needed straight from the wp-admin:  Plugins > Add New.  You can also use FTP to download your plugins folder from GoDaddy right to your local plugins folder.  I didn't want all those plugins in my local install, so I just installed the ones I wanted through the admin.

Then I used FTP to download my themes folder to my local themes folder and activated one.

Then I used Tools > Export to get  the posts from my live site.

Then I use Tools > Import to add the posts to my local site.

I used XAMPP and didn't look at the previous links posted so maybe they say the same thing.

Where should I put MySQL database locally in order to make Wordpress work locally?

I did a backup yesterday from GoDaddy of my database.  Is there a tool that I need to use to get the database locally?  I know that FTP will not work with it so I am looking for another option.

mtzsw, here is the easiest way for you
1. follow this guide to install wordpress on wamp since it will not work when you copy wordpress folder from your host
http://blog.jlbn.net/?p=34
2. on your host, log into your wordpress dashboard
3. click on Tools
4. click on Export and make sure to select All Authors on Restrict Author
5. click on the button "Download Export File"
6. on local wordpress, log into your wordpress dashboard
7. click on Tools
8. click on Import
9. select Wordpress on the bottom
10. browse to select export xml file from host you've just downloaded
11. click on the button "Upload file and import"
12 check box "Download and import file attachments"
13. click the button "Submit"
