There may be an easier way but I've done this.

Save the file <------------------- important!!

Select all.
Shift click on the part you want to export as jpeg. It will now be unselected.
hit the delete button.

This should leave you with only what you want to export.

After you export, go to the File menu and revert to last saved version or use ctrl-z to get back to where your complete file is.

Whatever you do, don't save the file until you go back.

Best,
MH

hi all, this is an illustrator question yeah?
if i understand what you're on about in terms of the frame, i'm guessing  you mean the background, in that case, as far as I know you can't not have a background in a jpeg, if i'm understanding you correctly then you have to export as a png file.

tetsuyae,

blue-genie is right. If you're just trying to get a transparent background, it can't be done in jpg. You can export as png, gif, or set the background color to whatever color the image will sit on.

Just want to let you know in case you try that convoluted approach hoping to get a transparent jpg...

Best,
MH

If you are using Illustrator CS3, you can use the export frame tool (Shift+O) and create the area you would like to export as a JPG. Nothing outside of the area you select will be exported. You will also have the option to to save as one of many file types. If you would like a transparent background, you will have to save as a PNG or GIF.

Hi tetsuyae,

-my method of doing this-
1) Select and group the current work
2) Copy and paste in a new page
3) ctrl + alt + shift + s = Save as web copy
4) select all 100% quality and export in JPEG,

* advantage, you will have a good quality yet small file size image.

You can also copy and only the pieces or artwork you want selected and paste them in a "NEW" Photoshop document. When you choose to create a new PS file, with the Illustrator artwork selected, PS will automatically create the new document to the size of the file you currently have copied. When you paste the artwork into the new PS doc, you will be given the option to paste as SMART OBJECT. Use this option because you can alter the size in PS without losing quality. Then you can save the artwork in many different formats from PS.
