Thanks for the reply nappy. Even after adding the sites to the trusted sites list, the activex will not load.
I tested microsoft updates because I know it uses activex and it also would not install.
Any other ideas?
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsIt appears that without administrative rights, users are not able to install activex controls. The problem is that we are implementing Oracle in 2 weeks and many users are just now logging into our test instance. In order for them to get to the oracle application, jinitiator needs to be installed. When users log in they just get a box with a red x and no option to install the activex control. I have done some research and found that by changing a few options in group policy (Comp Config -> Admin Temp -> Wind Comp -> Int Expl ->Sec Page -> Internet Zone: Changed Download signed ActiveX Controls to Enable, Enable -> Changed Download unsigned ActiveX Controls to Enable, Prompt -> Changed Run ActiveXcontrols and plugins to Enable, Enable).
After changing the group policy settings, running gpupdate /force on the server and local PC, and rebooting the PC, the users still cannot download activex controls. When I log in as an administrator they install without any issues.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi nappy,
I thought I had all these settings correct but confirmed this.
Also, after logging in as one of our users, the GP is working and the changed were made in the internet options.
However, they still cannot install the activex controls.
Do you know of anything that would conflict with these settings?
Thanks,
Jeff
Yes it is a trusted site. It is our oracle system and looks to www.oracle.com to download the jinitiator plug in. I put *.oracle.com and every other possible site it would look at with no success. Even though it says it is a trusted site, and I have the setting to allow trusted sites to download and install the activex plugins, users still get the red x and no installation or prompt to allow installation.
I am very confused on what setting would be conflicting with this.
Very weird, some of our computers allowed the users to install the activeX after making the changes in GP. There are still around 5 or so that would not allow the user to do the installation. For these computers, I manually logged on as administrator and installed jinitiator. I believe Oracle does have a MSI installer for jinitiator, but we do not want to have to push that out each time there is an update. We would like for this to automatically push out once we put it on our oracle server. If it is only a f ew computers, which is seems to be at this point, I will have to see what the difference is. It could be that a local security policy was put in a place without me knowing about it.
Sorry for the late response as when we did go live with Oracle, I did not have any time to get on here.
Thanks nappy.

I created a policy for trusted sites. It's a bit of a pain but they just call me, I update the gpo they logoff/on and then the active x is downloadable. Not all work this way but most do.
