Firstly, what browser are you using?
And within that browser can you view videos from, for example, from you tube?

Check your Flash install by pointing your browser at:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/

If that works fine the error is either the detection used at the site is coded badly or the message should read, "You either don't have Flash installed or have Javascript disabled".
Enable JS in your browser and try again.

I have IE8. And I can not watch videos from youtube. I get the message that I either have inactivated Java-script, or have an old version of Adobe's flash player. So then I must have inactivated Java-script, but how and where do I activate it?

Control Panel/Internet/Advanced: Java (Sun) Use JRE 1.5.0_12 for <applet> (Requires restart)
Should this one be selected? (It is on my laptop)

You could use adobe's flash uninstaller and reinstall flash again.
Read the overview firstly

It didn't work, I uninstalled Flash player with your link (made sure no program was running, but I didn't do anything to the processes). The same thing as before. I didn't reboot though, after uninstall and install again.

It be better to reboot and then reinstall flash

Masqueraid,

I have followed the instructions on Microsoft's supportpage that you linked to. It doesn't help though, even after I have enabled Active scripting.

"You can use JavaScript!", yes I get this popup message, so I should somehow be able to use Java. But how? Seems like I've tried everything!

by: MASQUERAIDPosted on 2009-07-27 at 09:12:16ID: 24953083

If you have Javascript enabled - and if you got the pop-up box then you have - you shouldn't need to do anything else.

Do you get animation at the Shockwave Welcome page I linked to in my first post?  If so the fault is with Flash detection on the website you are trying to use.

Oranqutang,

I read through the TechNote "Troubleshoot Adobe Flash Player installation for Windows" (TechNote tn_19166) at http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html Here, it says that:

"Download Signed ActiveX controls" and "Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins" options are set to "Prompt".

But in my IE8, the "Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins" are set to Active. Does this make a difference?
The first is the same (Download...), it is set to Prompt.

hermesalpha, I had this same problem and it was driving me nuts!!!!
This is how it worked for me:

1. Uninstall Java, Shockwave and Flash

2. Uninstall IE8 and IE7 using the control panel and selecting "View installed Updates" (you might have a little problem there if you installed IE8 before installing SP3 - You will have to uninstall SP3 also if this is your case).

3. Do a clean install of SP3: Clean Install Method: from the command prompt type msconfig, in the Services Tab HIDE all Microsoft Services, disable all the other services, disable all of the entries in the Startup Tab and restart the computer. NOW install SP3.

4. Install IE8.

5. Go back to msconfig and re-enable all the services and items in the Startup tab.

6. Reinstall Java, Flash and Shockwave.

Hope this works for you.

BitsBytesandMore,

I am not sure whether I installed IE8 after of before I updated my SP2 to SP3. Where can I check that?

It that is the case (that I installed IE8 before I updated to SP3), do you mean that I need to do a completely new installation of the whole OS? And then reinstall all software? Or can I just remove the update and revert to SP2?

Ok back to your original post: Try these quick steps firstly if you want...
1-Download ccleaner http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/  Run ccleaner.And reboot machine
2-Run the flash uninstaller http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html and reboot machine
3-Download dialafix http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix
Run dialafix(click ok on "unable to determine version of IE")
Wiyhin dialafix:Tick Activex controls/codecs and hit go.
Reboot machine
4-Install flash http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ + reboot machine
5-Try to watch flash videos

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-07-28 at 04:39:24ID: 24959626

If it doesn't show up in your add remove programs (make sure you check the view installed updates) you would not be able to remove because it would not be there it thus you would only have the option of removing the SP3....check out this article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

Hope it helps....

by: orangutangPosted on 2009-07-28 at 20:23:10ID: 24966942

Try "A damaged Windows system registry or incorrect permissions in the registry may prevent Flash Player from installing or registering correctly." from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/494/cpsid_49419.html

by: hermesalphaPosted on 2009-08-29 at 10:41:12ID: 25214705

I have reinstalled the whole OS now (XP SP2). Is this order the right one?: First update to XP SP3, thereafter update from IE6 to IE8? I think this was the source of the whole issue with FlashPlayer, right? I updated to IE8 before updating to SP3 (which I shouldn't have done).

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-08-29 at 14:46:53ID: 25215489

Is everything working ok now?

by: hermesalphaPosted on 2009-08-30 at 14:55:18ID: 25219584

Now I will update to SP3. After that, I update to IE8.

by: hermesalphaPosted on 2009-08-30 at 21:36:46ID: 25220538

"The updates are being downloaded and installed"
"Installation status: Installing Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP (update 51 of 51)..."

The green indicator went to completely full (100 %),  but there is no OK button, only Cancel.
It has freezed here whole night, nothing more happens.
Must I reinstall whole XP again, for the 6th time :(  :(  :(

by: hermesalphaPosted on 2009-08-30 at 21:40:11ID: 25220549

Forgot there was another popup-window for IE8, it worked fine!

by: BitsBytesandMorePosted on 2009-08-31 at 05:17:52ID: 25222141

When it freezes like that it could mean that you have too little memory, bad memory or a bad hard drive. If you need to reinstall again, make sure that when it asks you  if you want to format that you do the slow format. That will attempt to repair any bad sectors on the hard drive.
