Use google maps to send and address and get longitude/latitude coordinates

I am using the Google Maps API.  I want to pass the address and get the Longitude and Latitude returned.  For example, I pass in "10 Smith St Los Angelos, CA" and  I want returned to me the Longitude and Latitude.
