The Xp reinstall was a clean install on a new drive. So no trace of old software. I have loked in all temp files and some registry settings with no luck.
i may give this registry another look and try it again!

Browse All TopicsI have a client who has a full version of Ulead VideoStudio Version 11. We have tried many times to install this software program after his computer crashed one day. Upon reinstalling Windows XP, everything works fine. The only issue we have is when trying to install Ulead Video Studio and running the software. The install program works fine with no errors. As soon as we launch the program though and error boxe comes up titled "Ulead VideoStudio" and the error says "An error occurred when update Layer Window". When I click on OK the software program appears in the taskbar at the bottom of screen, but you can not do anything to it and there is no screen to work with. If I try to right-click on the software in the tasbar to close, no menu comes up. I have to open Task Manager and end task. Does anyone know what would cause this? We have successfully installed the software onto another machine and the install and opening of the software was fine. We have also downloaded a fresh install file to no avail.
Thanks

New drive righto,
have you updated the system fully before re-installing Ulead?
As your error seems to point to this area. As soon it runs something is not loading correctly may indicate an old bug and requires a fix.
There are some hot fixe here maybe you need to re-install them.
http://www.ulead.com/tech/
The most likely cause of problems now would be in these areas>
update the video drivers, update java, adobe flash, .netframework, office/ ensure you have all the right codecs and software re-installed.
And the system is patched
It is advisable to stop your AV and any security software during set up.
AV scans during install and may corrupt the install by preventing some files from installing.

I have tried all of your suggestions and the same error keeps coming up. I can not believe this is doing this on this one machine only. I have usccessfully installed the software on two other machines without any issues at all.
I uninstalled the anti-virus system on the pc just to be sure, jupdated .net framework, flash and java. installed the ulead updates.
still once, installed, and the install process seems to be successful, as soon as you try to launch the program it comes up with the same error as in my original post above.
This really has me baffled!!!
hmm down to basics.
Please take a look in the events, control panel administrative tools event viewer / applications
post back one of the errors id name and number
Looking back over your original comments
Since the install goes okay it's when you launch the program it stays stuck on the taskbar right?
with the error An error occurred with update Layer Window<L< is that exactly what you see, may I ask how you are launching it?
I'm grabbing straws here
check for spyware, it can happen that spyware / viruses can replace some software and prevent it from running.
Download hijackthis save it to a folder extract it to the same folder then do a scan and save a log
http://download.cnet.com/T
Automated analysis of HijackThis log data
http://www.hijackthis.de/
I will log into the machine (I am doing this reotely at present for my client) and run the hijackthis software and post a log here. What you are saying is correct, the install goes fine. When you launch the program from the Programs menu item that the install creates, the error message comes up then when you click OK, it goes down to the taskbar as an item and you can not do anything with it. You have to launch task manager and end process that way!.
In all other aspects the PC works fine, this is the only issue, so I would be surprised if it is spyware causing this, but will check it out all the same. I have run the software ccleaner to check registry items that maybe untoward but that did not help.
I will let you know what Hijack this tells me.
Thank you mbelletty that's will be interesting for sure since it's now about eliminating possibilities
To add
Ccleaner has known to cause problems with software if the user allows it to delete all it finds.
it's possible the regestry is damaged.
I'd also look for the regestry keys for Ulead Video Studio and delete all of that delete any remaining folders in Programfiles and TEMP folder.
May also be the sequence of things in the installation guide recomended that all required software be installed prior
I'll post this Knowledgebase from Corel. Corel owns Ulead Video Studio
One possible answer but it refers to VS9
I keep clicking the VideoStudio 9 icon but VideoStudio 9 won't launch. What do I do?
This is due to Data Execution Prevention for WinXP with Service Pack 2.
Go to Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance Settings > Data Execution Prevention . Select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select then click Add . Locate vstudio.exe in the VideoStudio folder in Program files and select Open . Click Apply then restart your computer.
Also look in the bottom panel
Installation Instructions for VideoStudio 11

KnowledgeBase
http://corel.custhelp.com/
Logfile all clean no viruses or spyware
So other ideas.
Are you trying to run this from remote?
Can I see some of your Events errors
try the DEP- Advanced > Performance Settings > Data Execution Prevention from above
Is the taskbar locked?
Lock it and Uncheck Hide The Taskbar.
Add Ulead to the windows firewall exceptions.
Is this system running an extra monitor or dual screens or clone mode enabled?
disable these features and use single display
I notice in your hijackthis log you have two instances running
Running processes:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.e
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlog
C:\WINDOWS\system32\servic
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2ev
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchos
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchos
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2ev
Could be related to the display and a problem with your desktop
I have tried the DEP with no luck. Just tried adding Ulead to the Firewall exception, still no luck.
Event viewer shows install of all Ulead systems completed successfully. There is nothing untoward in the event viewer that I can see. When the error comes up should the PC record an event item?
I have been logging into the PC remotely using logmein (Do you know it). The same error comes up when the user tries running the software sitting in front of the PC.
The taskbar isnt locked.
Maybe this PC needs a completly new install again of XP. I would prefer not to do it as there is nothing wrong in any other software system on this PC or with the pc efficiency, but I just can not figure this one out!
Something is intefering with it when it opens.
Reboot the system
try locking the taskbar
It should record an error event like Ulead encountered an error with a small descryption and id number
Look in the events then applications
All I can think of is
disconnect that system from the internet and stop AVG, could be AVG interferring with it.
Could be google desktop if you have it.
Try updating the packs and version you have
http://www.ulead.com/downl
It maybe missing a component
What is different from this system and the others you have installed it on.
Did the client stop the AVG during setup?
I uninstalled AVG and installed once and it still happened. I have installed all of the updates and patches from the above link too. Still no good.
I will have to concede on this one and re-install the PC again. as much as I hate to as everything else is working perfectly.
Oh Well I have spent too much time on this issue already. I think a re-install would be easier now anyway. Thanks for all of your help on this one!
You would not believe this!!!!!!!!!
I just created a new user account on the PC. Logged into it.
Opened VideoStudio from the Desktop icon, and guess what...........it opened up just fine.
Hence, the user profile must have something wrong with it.
I hate computers sometimes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ah!!!!
that's awsome of course good workaround should have thought of it myself.
Good job there mbelletty glad you did that before re-installing windows.
Yeah something is wrong in that profile.
Since you resolved it yourself please accept your answer as the solution.
Appreciate your feedback matey.

two possible ideas,
(1) it can only be installed on one system, as you mention you have installed it on another system.
(2)
depending on the re-install of XP was this a repair re-install?
An repair re-install does not remove your files so you have to manually uninstall all remnents of the previous install of Ulead
Old folders and reg keys
there maybe some old temp files in the temp folder. delete those.
regestry keys
2 instances of Ulead running. check the task manager
Look in the start up group to see if there is a previous Ulead running at boot.
