How do I clean Tiff image from Metadata

I work with medical tiff images also containing metadata (doctor, patient,etc...).
From linux-server installed PHP I use the PHP EXIF functions to read their metadata to import these images into a PostgresQL database. The metadata determine to which record in the database they are inserted.

Afterwards, I would like to publish them online without the (privacy sensitive) metadata.
One solution I found might be to convert the filetype to jpg and then remove the metadata from the jpg using a jpeg_cleaner php-script using http://robert-beran.de/dl.php?id=4

I would however prefer to store the actual tiffs in the database, without the metadata.

You are going to need some type of software to help you out. (not sure what you have on hand)

Depending on how many you want to clean at once and how fast; there are products out there for cheap to free.

Thanks for your quick reply. It is good to know that ImageMagick is able to solve my problem.
Do you have any experience with using IM through PHP (http://www.php.net/manual/en/book.imagick.php)

Would I use AcquireI guess I would need a function like GetImagePixels? (http://www.imagemagick.org/api/cache.php#AcquireImagePixels)

The PHP wrappper for ImageMagic only has function "Imagick::getImageBlob", which is experimental and not documented. (http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.imagick-getimageblob.php)
I would not know how to use it!

Do you have any experience with Imagick under PHP or any suggestion on how to integrate command line instructions for ImagaMagic within my PHP-script?

I sure don't. It does look there there are a handfull of scripts out there using PHP and IM.

Here is info from this site http://www.ioncannon.net/php/75/how-to-compile-imagemagick-for-php-by-hand/

"Install ImageMagick either from source or a binary. In my case I'm running fedora so I just installed it with yum.

Download the MagickWand extension for PHP. Go to your PHP source directory and find the ext directory under it. In the ext directory expand the extension.

Change directories into the magickwand directory under ext and run phpize. Change back to the root PHP source directory and remove the current configuration file: rm -f ./configure In the root PHP source directory run ./buildconf --force to rebuild the configuration script

You can verify the configuration file was created correctly by looking for magickwand in the new configure script: grep magickwand configure Now reconfigure your PHP.

Use the flag --with-magickwand= to enable MagickWand. For me the directory to ImageMagick was /usr Now you can recompile PHP and reinstall it. You should find MagickWand listed in a phpinfo() once it is compiled in correctly. "

Thanks for your help. I am very happy your advice on installling Imagemagick for PHP.... since I am not experienced with installing software under Linux.

However, I still would like to see if anyone at EE has some experience with the actual ImageMagick commands (directly or through a PHP-wrapper) to strip a TIFF from its Metadata.
