I plan to upgrade from Windows XP x64 professional edition to Windows 7 X64 professional edition, it seems that I have to upgrade to Vista ultramate edition first (suppose to be x64, right?), and then upgrade to Windows 7 ultramate, right?

You are correct. According to Microsoft you cannot upgrade to Windows 7 x64 from any operating system other than Vista x64. You can qualify for upgrade pricing doing an upgrade from XP, but you will be required to do a clean install. The only way to upgrade keeping your installed apps as they are would be to upgrade to Vista x64 then to 7x64, however this is not recommended.

As a side note, you shouldn't need to upgrade to Vista Ultimate x64 in the interim - you should be able to upgrade to Vista Business x64 as the interim upgrade. Also remember that with your purchase of Windows 7 Business Edition x64 you will receive downgrade rights to Windows Vista Business x64. As such if you can get a hold of Vista upgrade media you won't need to actually purchase the Vista upgrade, you can just purchase the Windows 7 upgrade media, call Microsoft for your downgrade license key for Windows Vista, then upgrade to Vista Business x64 from XP, Install SP1 then SP2, then upgrade to Windows 7 all for the purchase of Windows 7.
No, there are 64-bit versions for Home Basic through Ultimate. However, only the Ultimate DVD comes with the 64-bit version on the disk. For the others, you just have to download the 64-bit image (the same license key applies)

I tried one PC with XP x86 edition to Vista Business x86 first and then windows 7 x86 edition, only some printer and VPN client software needs to be reinstall.
Please share some bad experience on this.
That's correct...
Generally speaking, most folks would recommend doing a clean install, rather than an upgrade. This has been the "conventional wizdom" for quite some time when dealing with a simple XP->Vista upgrade choice. If you compound the scenario with a XP->Vista->7 upgrade, the choice become even more clear.
Yes, that means you'll have to reinstall all of your software... but you'll end up with a "pure" system with all of the software installed in the correct locations, all of the registry and file system virtualization in place, etc.

No you should be able to go directly from Vista Business x64 to 7 Ultimate x64 without any in between upgrades ...
