You'll need a piece of software that's made to make DVDs.  It should automatically convert the video file(s) for you.  I've used Nero's for a while:

http://www.nero.com

If you get Nero 8 Ultra Edition for $79.99, you'll have a whole suite of burning/conversion/playback utilities that are top of the line, and easy to use.

Hi Day999
50 GIG my good god that is just ( explicits) amazing  lol
what did you capture too? Raw avi?
I dont think any video editor will load 50 gig raw avi  if its raw avi
for splitting or let alone converting editing. burn to DVD
you'll have to split it into many segments mpeg2 as well for DVD.
Whats the current format?

Virtual dub will split it but only supports avi and mpeg.
http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/virtualdub_procedures.htm

Then you need a DVD software if you have one installed such as Roxio Nero WinDVD you can use Xp inbuilt to burn already provided above.

You'll have to re-consider your capturing options, first where are capturing from WEB/  a camera or something TV?
let me know

lets try using a different method of capture, there is certainly a better way with a smaller output file, at this point is no use offereing any conversion or editing tools to support that size, your processor would proabably over heat
Come back with the details of your source please then I can offer some solutions

Hi Merete

I have an old analog video camera that use's hi8, i used Ulead Video Studio software to capture the film from my video camera to my pc.  In the properties for the film the video compression is MS-YUV
I can play the film in windows media player

Hi davy999: wow I am impressed that WMP will play it even that size  that's the first positive comment about it lol.
How big is your HDD? To start editing  a 50 gig video very large size windows requires soem temp space for converting and or editing, windows also needs at 10 gig to sun successfuly/
So yuou'd need at least 130 gig HDD more is better, whats the processor speed? ram?

Ulead Video Studio  will do what you want since you already have it you woudl be familiar with it
which version do you have ?
Ulead Video Studio has a time line to split this movie you can use DV Quick Scan to split the video
http://manifest-tech.com/media_pc/ulead_vs_10.htm

VideoStudio allows you to export your video files in various media formats. You can output
your work in formats like DVD/VCD/SVCD

Ulead Studio 6 guide PDF 8 megs
http://www.anslab.iastate.edu/Class/Digital%20Images/VideoStudio6%20manual.pdf

What else do you have in the way of DVD burning? software
try Virtual dub provided to split it if your up to it.
Always use copies.

This to me is a daunting task as I would have to think about the space on the hdd use only copies of the movie incase there is problems.
But splitting it is your only option or recapturing it to a better format for DVD.
I woudl have to read up on your options of saving the capture to offer suggestions on that.
I have an old Video camera same situation
I used my VCR and my video capture card PVR recorder from VCR  to PC then captured in WMV format small nice quality then converted to mpeg and burn to DVD
Do you want to burn this  to DVD as a data disc for backup?  or an actual playable DVD for DVD players?
