What does the error "There was a problem reading this document (12) mean? How can I fix this with only the current PDF available to me?

Could be a number of reasons - Quark 5.0 does this a lot when creating PDF's. In rare cases, you may be using a version of Acrobat prior to the one that that this particular pdf was created for. In that case, upgrading to a more recent version of Acrobat may help. If that is not the case, you will not be able to fix the error within the existing pdf.

There is FAQ regarding this Error..For an Site
I get error messages such as “There was an error processing a page” or “There was a problem reading this document”
Older versions of Acrobat Reader than 4 are not able to deal with these new facilities, which in most cases will result in an error message.
Please check out the version of your Acrobat Reader by selecting “Help • About Acrobat Reader...”. If the version is anything lower than 4.0 (e.g. 1.x, 2.x, 3.x), we urge you to get the latest version of Acrobat Reader by downloading it from Adobe’s website.
How to Fix it.---
IF u donot have the Source File ---
option 1. If u have latest version of Acrobat 5 or 6 . Just open and 'save as' another pdf name. It will recreate the object and fix the errors
option 2. Just save the pdf in Acrobat 5 into PS file . Then re distill it Adobe Distriller.
Option 3. Use Adobe Distriller printer[Choose any Settings] and the pdf back into pdf.

Sounds like a corrupt PDF. Not much you can do about it except replace it with a good copy.
