Sure, if you have acrobat or Illustrator. Otherwise you're out of luck.

Regarding the New Images insertion it support only 'JPEG' and 'Tiff' [Sorry not GIF (I think it would be Easier to convert Gif to Jpeg unless it is animated Gif)]

Use acrobat writer and you can easily insert picture in jpg format. Use compu pic or some other tool to convert into jpg format.

I was looking for detailed instructions without having to use a 3rd party product.  I figured out how to insert my .gif by creating a button with an image and setting the background color to match my background and removing the borders.

I know this is prob. a very bad way of doing it... but it was the only way I could work it out... I opened the jpg file I wanted inserted as a pdf (from Adobe Acrobat).  I just appended it to the file (although it works as a new document too).  Then I just cut and paste the graphic into the Acrobat file I was editing.  I had to do this to get my text to look ok without a box as well!  (As you may have worked out I have no idea about Acrobat file editing).
You can also save MS files (Word etc) as PDF files using the Acrobat buttons and then using that file you can then cut and paste from an Acrobat file into another open one.

Hope that helps.  I read this thread and had no idea how to do the button you talked about...

The buttons the author is refering to is accessed from the "type" field property of a form field.
From within acrobat: select "form tool", create a box, give it a name, and select "Button" from the Type menu

There is still not an explanation of how to import an image (eg jpeg) into a pdf document using Acrobat.
Why is not straight forward?

I agree, this should be easier.
From Adobe
http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/2e6d6.htm

To paste a PDF, JPEG, or GIF file into a PDF file:
1. Open the PDF file.
2. In Acrobat, open the file that contains the image you want to use as a watermark. (To locate a JPEG or GIF file, choose All Files from the Objects of Type pop-up menu in the Open dialog box.)
3. Choose Window > Tile > Vertically so that you can see both files.
4. Make the image file the active window. Select the touchup object tool, and click the image to select it. The entire page is selected.
5. Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac OS) the image, and choose Copy from the pop-up menu.
6. Make the PDF file that you want to have a watermark the active window. Select the touchup object tool.
7. Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac OS) in the document, and choose Paste in Back from the pop-up menu.
8. Drag the image into place.
9. Repeat steps 4-8 for each page on which you want the watermark.

The Answer, above relates to Watermarks
not to images one wishes to place in a certain spot within
an Acrobat page.

Can this not been done in a straightforward way?

My solution of creating a button with an image and setting the background color to match my background and removing the borders worked for me.

If you have photoshop this might help:
In Windows, Open Photoshop, click File, Import pdf
Position your cursor where u want your image to be placed
Open the image file you wish to insert, then drag it to where u want it inserted; or you can just cut and paste it (be sure that the image is not locked).
Using the Move tool, position the image precisely where u want it to be.
then File, Save As, pdf format again.

I must say I wasted an hour trying to do this and none of these methods seemed to work. Why is this such a chore?

by: dmaceldPosted on 2004-07-16 at 10:34:33ID: 11570500

habanagold,
What specifically are you wanting to do?
How about asking this as a new question so it will get addressed properly?

by: HostLeadPosted on 2004-10-28 at 22:04:51ID: 12441437

I found a way to add a picture.
Simply open it with Acrobat, then use the touchup object tool to move the picture (T on keyboard).
You can also drag and drop it in your pdf file.

In Acrobat 8, go to Tools > Advanced Editing and select 'TouchUp Object Tool'
Right-click on the document and select 'Place Image'
You can then select an image stored on your computer and drop it into the document.
