Question

Compile Error in Hidden Module: Excel 2007

Asked by: sgreene63

I'm receiving an error when Excel 2007 opens
'Compile Error in Hidden Module: AutoExecNew'
and an error when Excel 2007 closes
'Compile Error in Hidden Module: DistMon'
Microsoft knowledge base says to look for two Adobe files
Pdfmaker.dot
Pdfmaker.xla
and delete them out of the startup folder; however, I don't see them in the folder.
Any suggestons?

There are two XLSTART folders. One in the MS Office installation directory - something like C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12 - and the other in your C:\Documents and Settings\*username*\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel directory. The latter is usually a hidden directory so you may need to go into Windows Explorer, and select Tools-Folder Options and on the View tab, click the Show hidden files and folders option.
You can also locate the xla via a search as long as you select the option to include hidden files and folders.

sgreene63:

Did you check the Windows startup folder or the Excel startup folder?

The Excel startup folder should be found at the following path.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE12\XLSTART

We got "compile error in hidden module" in the past when there were files or libraries disabled by the application.

Go in Excel
- Help
- About Microsoft Exce (at the bottom)
- Disabled items

If there are items in the list, you can enable them, and your problem can be solved.

Jaes,
I usually forget about the Program Files one! I should also have pointed out that you can set an additional startup folder in the Excel options, but I've never (yet) seen the PDFMaker.xla install itself in there!

Rory:

I personally use an alternate XLSTART folder that I created in My Documents\My Excel\XLSTART so that everything gets backed up when I back up My Documents.  AS for PDFMaker, I wrote my own custom Excel PDF Maker in Excel VBA since I didn't know anything was available elsewhere.  ;)
