Question

Can't view PDF in browser

Asked by: mcrossland

I have a PC that gives the following error when clicking on PDF files on the web.
"Cannot use adobe reader to view PDF in your web browser.  Reader will now exit.  Please exit your browser and try again."
I have uninstalled, reinstalled Adobe 8.1.1.  I also tried changing the internet preferences in acrobat to not display pdf's in browser but it gives the same message.   I can right click on the pdf web link and save to desktop, then open that way with no problem.   I do have the appropriate file in the PLUGINS directory of IE so that's not the fix.

Thanks!

tplaya,
When I go to tools manage add-ons, I don't see the Adobe reader plugin.  I looked on another pc that it works on and it is there.  I'm wondering why the re-install didn't put the plugin there.  Any ideas how to get it there?

Dan and Midi,
Sorry but I didn't ask for alternate programs.  I want to fix the programs that are standard on my network.  :)

Hi

This sounds like you have either multiple versions of Acrobat products (Reader or Pro) installed or a previous installation has not been fully removed.

You will need to remove 8.1.1 again and then remove any remnants of the older versions manually from the system and in the registry.

for Acrobat Pro see:      http://www.adobe.com/go/kb400723
For Reader see:         http://www.adobe.com/go/kb400728

Once your system is cleaned reinstall v8.1.1 and it should all burst into life.

Reinstall Adobe Reader. It should detect whether the plugin is install. If not, the installation of Reader will install the plugin.

>> Any ideas how to get it there?

If you have conflicting versions the reinstall and repair options will not correctly amend the registry. You will have to clean up first before reinstalling.

I found that the issue is in the user's profile.  I logged in as a different user and found that PDF's view just fine in IE.  I know that I can just create a new profile but I want to try to fix this one.  Any ideas where to look?

If it's isolated to one user on the same machine, you might also want to check what security level they are set to on the local machine.

Thank you very much but none of these suggestions resolved the issue.  I reloaded the OS and works fine now.
