Question

Adobe Reader 9.0 freezes when I try to print

Asked by: pccbryan

I am having issues printing from a particular computer to a particular printer in Adobe Reader 9.0.  I open a document in Adobe Reader and click file>print and it freezes. It will never come up.

Computer: XP Pro SP3
Printer: HP Laserjet 4000tn Series  PCL 6

I have uninstalled/reinstalled the printer drivers. I have uninstalled/reinstalled both Adobe Reader 9.0/7.0.9.

The printer is functioning and will print from any other programs without any problems. I can print with no issues from Word/Excel/etc.

I read somewhere to try to set the default printer as another printer and it worked, however it still takes ~3-4 minutes to get it to load.

I have tried everything I can possibly think of to do. Please let me know if I have missed something!

Thanks!

Try using the PS driver that should also be avaialable for that printer.  PDF files use postscript so the PS driver (a postscript driver) should work better.

Does this happen with any PDF file or just a specific one?

I would recommend just having one version of Adobe Reader installed at once.  I don't know that you have both installed but just wanted to make sure.

Hi,

Sorry it took me so long to respond. Thanks for your help. It happens on any PDF file. I have also now tried Foxit to try to resolve my issues. It does the exact same thing. I have installed the PS driver and it did not work. And I only had one instance of Adobe on my computer at a time. I did full uninstalls and re-installs for each version when I was troubleshooting. I never had more than one instance of a PDF reader on my computer at any time.

Like I said, this has me stumped. I believe I've gone all around the world for this but I'm scared I missed the simple answer. Anyone want to throw in their .02?

How is this printer connected to the computer?  Are other computers able to use it with the same type of connection for printing?

Is it true that only this printer has the problem?  The computer can use other printer and not get an error?  How does it connect to them?

Thanks for the response.  Very odd but hopefully this info will help narrow it down.

I believe he is having issues before the print dialog even shows up. As soon as you click File->Print it locks up. I am having the same issues with one of my clients, I have read somewhere that this can be caused by having a printer which is unable to connect. Problems apparently started after latest round of Microsoft updates, but I won't blame Microsoft just yet...
