Up until Adobe Reader 8, Acrobat 6.0 Standard and Reader co-existed harmoniously on our Win XP Pro systems. Once Reader was upgraded from 7 to 8, 2 things happened:
1. If Acrobat is open, Reader will not launch.
2. Internet Explorer tries to launch PDFs in Acrobat instead of Reader. We set Acrobat not to display PDFs in the browser, and set Reader to do so, but it still happens. This is an issue when the PDF will not open because the version of Acrobat is too old to read the document. Even when Acrobat can read the document, there is still a pop up indicating that Acrobat cannot open the file, even though OK'ing it allows it to open in Acrobat.
This happens for certain in IE 7 - not sure about IE 6.
How do we get IE 7 to launch Reader for PDFs instead of Acrobat? We've also set file types to use Reader rather than Acrobat.

HayaBuddha - you are correct. Our budget does not allow for upgrading, but we still need Acrobat's features.
Alas, even with acrotray running, the error still arises. Any other ideas, without upgrading?
Internet Explorer error
You said that you unchecked the "display in browser" option, NCHCIT, but IN WHICH PROGRAM? Those settings are not exclusive and rely on things like which was installed first/updated last when both are on one system.
Two other things:
One, many times I have seen the "8 or 9" error when someone has 8 but it goes away if I install 9.
Two, there is a repair option that can be run on Acrobat and I know it will reset which program is used for what.

1. We uncheck Display in browser for Acrobat Standard.
We check Display in browser for Adobe Reader.
2. When building the image master, we install oldest to newest, but when imaging subsequent systems, I think that goes out the window.
3. The users reporting this issue have been upgraded from Reader 8 to Reader 9 with no change.
4. I'll check out the repair option. That sounds hopeful. Thanks.

I've run into this before and fixed it by removing both and putting reader 8 on the machine first and then putting 6.0 acrobat on afterwards. I don't know if this will always fix it, but it worked for the problem I experienced with the two fighting. Also, make sure acrotray.exe is running all the time since you are trying to open pdfs from the browser. If it isn't loading and staying in memory, it can't open them at times.
