I am trying to upgrade a user to Adobe Acrobat reader 9.1. She currently has Adobe Acrobat Standard 6.0 installed on her PC running Windows XP Professional SP3. The install process goes smoothly almost to the end. Then the process stops with the Error 1402, which says the users does not have access to a registry key. It have made sure the account does have access to the key manually using regedit and I am using the Domian Admin account to do this installation. I have installed Adobe reader 8.0 (which works fine) as a temporary work around but I would like to slove this now.

The error I get is
Error 1402. Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\S
OFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
Which is different than the error on the winhelponline site. I have tried the same principle to get it resolved but I get the same error. I have tried using both the Active Directory and the users credentials to get it installed but nothing works. I can install every version of Adobe up to verison 8.0 but nothing above 8.0.

I tried the second suggestion with no luck either. In order to finally get the installation to work I had to create a local administrator account. Take ownership of the registry keys in question then load the newer version of Acrobat reader. There are many other PCs on the network setup the same way but none of them had this issue. Thank you for the suggesions.

Although this talks about version 8 it will also work for version 9.1. Just navigate to the registry key in the error and follow the steps.
