How to check how many DPI a PDF is

Hi Experts

I have received a PDF file from a colleague and I need to know how many DPI this PDF is. Does anyone know I can find out how many DPI a PDF is. I have Adobe Acrobat Professional 9 installed.

I don't believe that this is possible within Acrobat once a PDF has been created.  You can naturally see it in the configuration settings before creating the PDF, but if you have been sent on already I do not know of a way to do this.

I've had a quick google on this and also drawn a blank.  Other people seem to be saying the same

Hmm thanks wobbled - Ok then, is there a way to approximate the DPI for a PDF, given:

a) the total filesize of the PDF
b) the number of pages in the PDF
c) the dimensions of the PDF (eg 210x297mm)

And let's assume that each page in the PDF has content on it, and that each page has the same amount and type of content on it.

Is there a way using all of the above to estimate/approximate the DPI of any given PDF?

There is no resolution associated with a PDF file! Every bitmap object can have it's own resolution, so you could have a PDF document with text and two images. The text portion is not rendered, it is stored as text and references a font and a size, so it's resolution independant. One of the images could be stored with an effective resolution of 30dpi, and the second image with an effective resolution of 1200dpi. When you print this file, the first image will of course look bad, the second one will look good.

You can use Acrobat's preflight tool to list the individual resolutions of the embedded bitmaps.
