I'm just printing using pdf printer (pdf995).
Sounds like I need to purchase Adobe Acrobat ? How does that work then (user experience) ?

I have a Word document with hyperlinks, then printed to .pdf file.
I thought the links would be active in the .pdf document but it doesn't work.

If using adobe acrobat and not just the word save as pdf feature, you should have an Adobe menu (2003) or Adobe tab (Word 2007) where you can/should change your conversion settings for word to include hyperlinks. On the settings tab of the change conversion settings dialog, make sure Add Links is checked.
If all else fails, using acrobat you can create the links by selecting the view menu > toolbars >advanced editing; Click once on the hyperlink tool (2 chains); Drag a rectangle over your hyperlink, set the action to open a webpage and type the url
