Question

Can't open PDF in IE7 but can save it and then open it

Asked by: dcadler

I have about 35 notebooks that have XP SP3 with IE7 and Adobe Reader 9 installed. The average user is not a member of local administrator or local power user group. When they go to a website that has a PDF and they click on the PDF link, they get an Open/Save dialog. Clicking on Open returns an Adobe Reader error "There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found.". I can save the file and then open it with no problem.

If I log in as a user who is a member of the local administrator group, I can open the pdf in IE7 just fine. So I must assume this is a rights issue.

Does anyone know what folder on the computer I need to give the user elevated permissions cation for? I know it is not c:\windows\temp.

Thanks,

Dave

I would try 2 things...
First
- Open Adobe Reader
- Go to Edit, Preferences
- Under Internet, make sure that "Display PDF in browser is checked

Second
- In IE7 click Tools, Internet Options
- Click Advance Tab, "Restore Advance Settings" and "Reset IE settings"

This isn't necessarily a permissions issue as IE is part of the "user profile". I would give the user temp admin rights log back in as them (with admin rights) see if you get the error. If you still get the error do the steps above as it is not a permissions issue.

Hope this helps

Dave,

As the user, if you launch Adobe Acrobat, click edit > preferences > click Internet on the left, and look for "Display PDF in Browser" and see if that is checked.

If that doesn't work, can you run Filemon while logged in as an affected user?  You can get it here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896642.aspx

Once you get that going, try to open the PDF from the browser and look for "Access Denied" messages in Filemon, that will show you where it is attempting to write the PDF to.

Hi

in addition to the 'Enable PDF in browser' posts above these folders are affected. If you give the users permission the issue should be solved

Program Files\Adobe\
Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\
Program Files\Internet Explorer\PLUGINS\
Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Adobe\
Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\

OK, first off, the settings in Adobe Reader-->Edit-->Preferences-->Internet-->Display PDF in Browser is checked.

I added the student user to the local admiinistrator group on the notebook and the error still occurred, so it isn't a permissions thing.

The students are locked out of the Internet Control Panel by group policy. I logged in as an administrator and reset the Advanced Settings as Spe01 suggested, then logged back in as the student and still had the problem so I must assume that the reset is per user account, yes? If so, this will be a problem because there are a couple hundred users that access the notebooks.

Not sure exactly the reason for GPO to block internet options but it is probably a good idea to remove it if possible. I say this only because it is a maintenance issue if its being blocked. Internet Options is a profile based option and cannot be maintained easily when users are blocked out. You can run into corrupt temp files java, flash, shockwave etc not working properly in webpages.

I understand that you probably dont want your users messing with the settings in Internet options but it is a good way for the user to clear out temp files/password etc and it is also a good way to troubleshoot an issue like this. If it is just a matter of resetting the IE settings then your laughing.

Also, I was just reading that you are using Adobe Reader 9, and version 9 has had many issues regarding what you are explaining. Have you considered reverting back to Adobe 7? Just thought I would throw that out there.

If it is a permissions issue, filemon will show you exactly where the issue is.

Spec01,

The GPO prevents the students from accessing the Internet Options and modifying settings. These are kids in K-12 educatoin. I do not want them canging things like the security level for the Internet zone.

I set up a test user and did not apply the Internet Options GPO and I still get the error. However, when I put the test user in the Domain Admins group, it worked.

Adobe reader was is installed using Group Policy Software Installation (GPSI). The installatin package is on a network share. There meust be some file that Adobe reader is trying to check on  the network share that is blocked from the domain user.

I wil run the FileMon suggested earlier and post the results.

Running FileMon revealed that there was a GPO assigned to the OU that was supposed to redirect the student users' Internet favorites and cookies to their network "My Documents" share had a typo in the path. This caused Acrobat Reader to fail to open the PDF in the browser.

Thanks and good job.
