Question

Automatically keep PDF log of all print jobs?

Asked by: Ajw43022

For everything I print out, I'd like a PDF to automatically be created for that print-job on my hard drive , so I can go back and reprint it at any point if I like.

Is there any program that does this, or script so that, for example, BOTH CutePDF and the regular printer would run in parallel?

thanks.

Another solution pdfcreator (http://www.pdfforge.org/)
You do every print with pdfcreator and you make and additional action in pdfcreator to make a physical print on you printer
In the action you could use the lpr command or vbscript (If you give some more specs about your printer I can help you with that)

Hi, thanks for your response!  I like the idea of using pdfcreator with a script.  I have a Brother HL-2070N printer.

Also, would there be a way so PDFCreator does *not* prompt me for a save location each time?  I'd just like the pdf to be automatically and silently saved in the default directory each time.

Thanks!

by: 3_SPosted on 2009-10-04 at 11:09:39ID: 25490005

PdfCreator will not prompt for a file if you use the auto-save option (located in the options). You can see it in the image I uploaded in my previous response.

In the script you can print the pdf (use the "<OutputFilename>" as input parameter for vbscript)
Do you need code to do this or can you work that out yourself? If yes do you prefer any kind of language?

by: Ajw43022Posted on 2009-10-04 at 19:40:45ID: 25492171

I don't think I can work it out for myself, I'm afraid.  Not much of a programmer.  As for the language -- I guess it'd be nice to not have to install any new programs to run the code.  Besides that, no preference.
Thanks so much for your help!

To use vbscript you don't need to install anything, can run on W2K, XP and vista without any problems. A vbscript is a simple textfile.

The auto-save worked?

I will have a look tomorrow to make a vbscript to make the print. No time today to work that out.

Autosave works.  And I just noticed the "Print" section in Options.  That *should* do what I want, but it's not working   Someone posted in the pdfforce forum that their having this problem as well:

Put code in vbscript and add as action.  It uses acrobat reader to make the print so it must be installed.
replace \\servername\printername with your printername (this does not have to be your default printer)
The code works for me but leaves acrobat reader open? Is this a problem? Code can be added to end the process of acrobat reader.

I also tested the print option of pdfcreator and it seems that there is a problem when it has to work together with the auto-save function (so it also does not work for me)

Dim FSO, WSH
Set FSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set WSH = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
Location = WSH.RegRead("HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\AcroRd32.exe\")
Command = chr(34) & Location & chr(34) & " /t " & chr(34) & Wscript.Arguments(0) & chr(34) & " " & chr(34) & "\\servername\printername" & chr(34)
WSH.run Command

Hmm, I'm having some problems.  Perhaps it's due to my own incompetence.

I created the file autoprint.vbs. and put the provided code inside.  I replaced \\servername\printername with my computer's name, then the printers name --  \\comp1\BrotherH.  Does this seem correct?

Then in PDFCreator's Actions tab I browsed to the newly created autoprint.vbs.

1. But when I print output to PDFCreator, autoprint.vbs is opened up in Wordpad,  But it's not actually run.

2. Would it be possible to use foxit reader instead of Reader?

3. Yes, I would appreciate code to close the program too.

Thank you for your help!

by: 3_SPosted on 2009-10-07 at 09:51:36ID: 25517429

1. Are your sure your filename is called autoprint.vbs and not autoprint.vbs.txt (option of windows explorer to hide file extension of known programs)
2. Yes should be possible is foxit reader has option to print file from command line
3. Will look for that, you need to make a hook to the program and end it.

by: Ajw43022Posted on 2009-10-07 at 10:24:40ID: 25517737

1. Ok, I figured it out.  It's that VBS files were set in my OS to be opened as text files by default.  I switched this to "Microsoft Windows Based Script Host" and it now works!

2. Foxit can print a PDF file silently to the printer from the command line. Here's the syntax:
    "Foxit Reader.exe" /t PdfFile PrinterName
Not quite sure how to implement this though.  I can't find Foxit in the registry

3. Thanks!

Since it's vbscript not so much possibilities to get a program
Code will wait some seconds and will then kill all open pdf files. (add this after code you already have)

I don't have foxit software so can't realy help you with that. If you will be the only user of this program you could hard code the location if it can't be found back in the registry.

For Each objProcess in colProcessList

Set objWMIService = Nothing
Set colProcessList = Nothing
