I have copied the file back into the appropriate files from the original Windows XP Pro disk, however that does not appear to fix the problem. The font missing is causing my emails, ie to display in an italic font. I cannot open Adobe Acrobat files that are using the arial font either. Please help! Thanks!

Copying a font into the Fonts folder doesn't add it to the PC.
You then have to add the font. Go to Windows Explorer; navigate to the Fonts folder (C:\Windows\Fonts); then select File - Install New Font and "point" to the font you need to install.
Repeat that for each of the fonts you need to add == THEN Windows will know about the fonts :-)
>> Copying a font into the Fonts folder doesn't add it to the PC.
It does if you use the steps above - from Windows help on installing fonts: "You can also drag OpenType, TrueType, Type 1, and raster fonts from another location to add them to the Fonts folder. This works only if the font is not already in the Fonts folder. "
Using, say, backup restore programs to deposit files into the Fonts folder wouldn't install the fonts (the files would be there, but Windows wouldn't notice them), but copying as above does: you'll get a warning from Windows about each font that you have already installed but if you accept the warning the next non-installed font will be added.

To copy the Arial font from a good PC to the bad one...
On a good PC, click Start and the Run. Type FONTS and hit enter
Copy the files 'Arial (Truetype)', 'Arial Bold (Truetype)', 'Arial Bold Italic (Truetype)' and 'Arial Italic (Truetype)' to a removable disk (floppy, USB stick etc) and take them to the poorly PC
The files should be called arial.ttf, arialb.ttf, arialbi.ttf and ariali.ttf.
On the poorly PC, click Start and the Run. Type FONTS and hit enter
Drag the files from the memory stick etc into the FONTS folder
