Question

Corel Draw and missing fonts

Asked by: gracious

Hi just upgraded to a new puter. I hooked up my old hdd as slave and copied all my corel draw files over to the new hdd. I also copied my fonts folder from old hdd Windows to new fonts folder in Windows. I installed Corel Draw 8 on my new hdd and when I opened up a file, it showed my fonts were missing and asked me to use substitutes. I then noticed that my font folder had 1200 fonts in it. I then moved all but 500 of them to a folder on my desktop. I then installed the Bitstream Fonts manager. I opened a new document in Corel and told Bitstream to locate all the fonts. It showed about 10 on the right hand side, the Corel side and all the rest on the left, on the contents side. Every font on the contents side all say "cannot install font". Could you please tell what I did wrong. What do I need to do to get Corel to see them. Also and this is strange, whenever I open anything, i.e. "START" and the start menu pops up, there is the number 8 all along the side of the menu. My "Minimize,Restore,Close" buttons at the top right hand corner don't say "Minimize, restore, close" they have numbers on them. There are these number thingys all over anything I open. I am at my wits end. Please help me!

You're having some font issues. Usually very sticky stuff. If you can, clean your new hdd and reinstall OS + Software. Then install either Suitcase or ATM (I don't have any experience with the bitstream software, but if you believe it's good, keep it), and install fonts thru those progs ONLY. Installing things to the windows font folder manually is just trouble because the windows fonts folder is a special folder (something a windows expert probably can explain better), but basically, it gets very messy very fast.
The numbers are supposed to be little icons, but the font where the arrows and other symbols are from is missing (I think it's one of the windings). It usually helps reinstalling, but if you still see numbers you need to reinstall that system font.

I fixed the number issue. I had moved Marlett ttf. from the Windows fonts folder to the desktop folder, I have moved it back and at least that is ok. A reinstall of the os is not an option right now. I just need to know what I can do to access those fonts. Do I need to delete the fonts folder on the desktop and then uninstall Corel Draw totally and then reinstall Corel Draw using the custom option so that Bitstream is installed right out of the gate and then open a new doc and tell Bitstream to to find the fonts and see what it shows, then perhaps try opening a saved file and maybe it will ask me where to locate the missing fonts and then pop the Corel CD in.....I just need someone who is familiar with Corel Draw and the font management it uses which is Bitstream. Any advice would be greatly be appreciated!

Sorry it has taken me so long to come back to this post but I was in the middle of moving...anyway, here is what I have done which seems to have fixed the problem. I got a list of the system fonts for win98se, and went into the Windows fonts folder and deleted any fonts that were not on the list and some of them I had to copy from the fonts folder I had made on the desktop. Then once I had all of the fonts in the Windows fonts folder, I deleted the fonts folder that I made on the desktop. I uninstalled corel draw. I reinstalled Corel Draw and did custom and told it to intall the Bitstream Navigator. I had Bitstream find all of the fonts on the C: drive and also on the Corel Cd. It now shows all installed fonts on the right hand side column and fonts that can be installed in the left "content" side. I was still missing some fonts though. I then hooked up the old hdd again as slave and told the navigator to find all the fonts from it and behold, I was able to find some of the missing fonts! I then dragged it over to the installed side and now they are also installed. There must be some other software cd which some of these fonts were used from and I think it is only a matter of finding which cd it is. So everything is working just peachy and I know eventually I will find those fonts! I guess

For future reference, if you go in the the C:\ Program Files\Font Navigator\Data_NT folder (or .../Data_95) folder and delete the file FontNav.fdb then reopen Font Navigator, it will seach all of the HDD's and rebuild your font catalog...
