Question

Corrupted Fonts

Asked by: rodimymum

Right on my windows 2003 server some of the fonts are corrupted.
eg, the start menu at the top where it displays your user name is all gone weird and symbolic,
and some programs have really small fonts.

now what i have tried already.
Ive got this software called pc bug docor, which finds corrupted fonts and also fix's them.
But it dont seemt to work, it fix's them, and then the start menu looks fine, but then it gets corrupted again.

Ive also tried changing the display font zise in display properties, dont seem work.

Ive also copy fonts from a another server, and copied it to the fonts folder, but it gives me a error saying you need to uninstall the old fonts before you can replace them. So i tried to delete the old ones but it gives me another error saying "make sure the disk is not protected".

How do i fix these fonts.

If you want i can send you a screendump of the fonts . . . .leave your email address.

Rodimymum,

I suggest starting with TweakUI for Windows XP (yes, it should run on Server 2003, you can get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx). Once you have installed it, go to the repair tab, pull down the menu and find "Fix Font Folder" and run it.

If that doesn't work, there is a free utility called "Fix Fonts Folder". This utility does more than fixing your fonts folder, it also checks your registry to ensure that the correct font name is associated with the font in the registry. From your description, this sounds like it may be the problem. You can get it here: http://www.high-logic.com/products.html

If that doesn't work, there is Font Doctor from Extensis (http://www.extensis.com), a commercial product. If you are thinking about going that route, get the full Extensis Suitcase, which includes Font Doctor. Also, before doing that, post back here with your efforts and results, and I may be able to make some additional suggestions - some of these problems come from mis-installed fonts, corrupt fonts, etc, and we may be able to narrow it down a little.

Cheers,
LHerrou

by: rodimymumPosted on 2006-02-27 at 06:09:43ID: 16055111

also the fonts that i see when i remote desktop is called Marlett Regular, its kind of symbolic.

>> i just been to www.high-logic.com They dont have anything called Fix Fonts Folder??
OK, they've changed their download page, but it's still available: http://www.high-logic.com/fifofo.zip

>> when i remote desktop to the machine the fonts are all weird???
Hmm, maybe it's the local machine substituting fonts? Can you remote desktop to the server using another machine, and see what happens then?

by: rodimymumPosted on 2006-02-27 at 07:25:15ID: 16055765

No its like that on every pc i remote desktop from its the same result . . . . .

by: rodimymumPosted on 2006-02-27 at 07:57:35ID: 16056102

now as i was typing up this questions the fonts on the machine are gone all weird even though im sitting at the machne

by: rodimymumPosted on 2006-02-27 at 08:02:39ID: 16056158

and not remotley connected

by: rodimymumPosted on 2006-02-27 at 08:21:47ID: 16056324

ok im back and ive tried everything . . . what else could be the problem

by: lherrouPosted on 2006-02-27 at 08:24:03ID: 16056343

Well, it does sound as if the problem is originating with the server. In that case, our original assumption about problems either in the fonts folder or the Registry are likely to be causing the problems. Have you been able to DL the Fix Fonts Folder (fifofo.zip) and run that?

by: lherrouPosted on 2006-02-27 at 08:26:50ID: 16056365

And have you rebooted after that?

by: rodimymumPosted on 2006-02-27 at 09:05:07ID: 16056721

yes ive tried that already

by: lherrouPosted on 2006-02-28 at 14:01:01ID: 16069979

I haven't forgotten you... :)

I have wracked my brain, and those of a couple of colleages, and the recommendation that probably you will need to re-install (or over-install). However, I have posted a pointer question in the Server 2003 TA here on Experts Exchange, in hopes that an expert on that OS may have some additional suggestions.

by: rodimymumPosted on 2006-03-03 at 02:21:18ID: 16092937

where are u??

by: missrikaPosted on 2006-03-03 at 07:24:35ID: 16095157

I believe that I've had that problem as well, although I don't use Server 2003.  If the font at GoogleGroups looks like an alien font, then it's most likely courier monospaced.

While searching through my favorites for the site where you can download the font packages that each version of windows ships with, I came upon a nice little tool -
http://www.geocities.com/AtmFix2kXP/

I've found another good link to all of the core fonts, if those will help.
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=34153&release_id=105
which I got to by going through:
http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/fonts.html and doing a search for Arial.

I have a guess.

Since remote desktop seems to have some bearing on it, rather than looking at fonts - look at your video driver.  Even if it's the latest one, try reinstalling it.

If that doesn't help, try a different physical video card; if it's an on-board video, disable it in BIOS so it doesn't have both video cards available for the OS.

rodimymum,

A couple of questions for you...

I realize you've tested logging in from other machines... but how about using another profile?  It's possible that your "SCREEN FONTS" registry key is corrupt for the particular profile you are using.

Also, have you installed any language packages on the server or are any other than English installed?  To verify this, look in the Control Panel > Regional and Language Settings.  Verify that no other languages are installed, and that support for Asian Fonts is not enabled.  Even if they aren't, you should review http://support.microsoft.com/kb/901150 to see if that will help (realizing also that you haven't gotten a BSOD, but you do have other symptoms related to that issue).

That's what I get for sleeping in.

I think Jeff is on the right track. If you can see the fonts while looking at the server, it's not the fonts. If you can see some of the fonts (most of the fonts?) but not all of them, it's not the driver. If it's on every machine YOU check, it would make sense that it's your profile.

Could it possibly be a terminal server policy which is being applied?
Try running rsop.msc from the run line and check the administrative templates that appears under both user and computer configuration.
