Indesign CS3 -- Packaging Fonts on a MAC

Tags: Adobe, Indesign, CS3
Hello,

Thank you for reading my post and really appreciate any advice. My question is, can someone please tell me the process in which Indesign Packages an indd on MAC platform (the knitty gritty details).  For work, every once in a while I need to alter some Indesign files that were originally created on a MAC, on my PC and I am having FONT conversion issues.

Here is why I need help:

When I open a packaged indesign file on my PC, that was created on a MAC.  I get 2 folders one that has the name of the job and the other is _MACOSX. The contents of the folder that is named after the job is the Fonts and Links folder; the native indd file and the .DS_store file.  When I open the fonts folder, I get the list of fonts used in the indd file and they all are Okb in size.  I am unable to convert them.  But when I open the  _MACOSX folder I get the same Fonts and Links folder.  Only when I click open the Fonts folder, the list of fonts is all there and the file size is about 20-40 kb.  It is these fonts that I am able to convert and use in my alterations.

Can someone please tell me the process in which Indesign packages each component.  Especially the _MACOSX folder?   The reason I ask is because I  have never seen a packaged file without the _MACOSX folder except for today.  I received a CD in which there was no _MACOSX folder for each of the packaged indesign files, so I was unable to convert the fonts and alter the text. (well...without substituting for something else).  Perhaps the person simply deleted them before saving it to disk to save space.  But before going back to the person, I would really appreciate as much knowledge about the subject as possible.

Thank you very very much and any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

kdubbie,

Thank you for your feedback. There are no excuses for why you did not receive any comments from the Experts who volunteer their time here, but there are a few reasons.

First, your question was asked on a Friday, and historically, traffic drops off significantly during the weekends.

Second, your question was asked in three relatively new zones at EE (about 675 have been added in the last year), so the traffic in those has not grown to the levels of zones like Access and Windows XP. When there aren't a lot of questions in those zones, there aren't a lot of Experts.

Third, prior to late January of this year, the comment posted by ForestDenizen -- that he had taken steps to find someone to respond to your question -- would not have happened; there was no system in place for us to begin to identify questions that had not received responses, let alone do something about it. That we couldn't do so quickly enough is probably a reflection of the fact that the Moderators also volunteer.

It would have been helpful for you to post your solution here prior to closing the question, but that's neither here nor there. We will forego efforts to find someone who might be able to help you, wish you well, and turn our attention to others we can still assist.

Regards,

Netminder
