Question

How do I process a batch of images using ImageMagick in Windows XP?

Asked by: klashn

I have a bunch of images from my Canon S230 camera. I have copied all the image files from the memory card to my hard drive and they all reside in one folder.

The image filenames are as such:  IMG_0001.JPG, IMG_0002.JPG, etc. and I have about 200 pictures.

The pictures have been taken in 1024x768 resolution and take up about 200kb - 300kb each.

I want to resize all these pictures down to about 100kb each.
I would prefer that the images stay 1024x768, but I would be happy with 800x600 too.

Using ImageMagick 5.5 (imagemagick.org) I used 'convert' with some arguments to resize one of the images, so essentially I know how to do ONE image, but would be tedious to do 200 images.

This is the string i typed into the command line interface of 'convert':

convert IMG_0xxx.JPG -size 800x600 -resize 800x600 temp.jpg      (xxx = any number)

This converts my original image of 1024x768 to 800x600.

While converting all these images in batch I would like to rename them to New_York_xxx.JPG

trying to find a way to do my 200 images, because it would take a long time to do it by hand!

Thank you in advance for suggestions and help

Kai

Not too familiar with imageMagick, but if you had ACDSee, it will do this for you - rename them, re-size them all inone batch.

Does the command line work like DOS:  convert IMG_0???.JPG -size 800x600 -resize 800x600 New_York_???.jpg

Photoshop & Macromedia Fireworks does this as well

If you want to kill two birds with one stone (sort of) try this:

If you have some webspace and want to put up your pics for your friends/family to see, and your webspace supports ImageMagick and PHP, download Gallery (http://gallery.menalto.com/) and install that - it can do batch resizing as well as letting everyone look at your images online! (no, I don't work for them) :)

Or...

Use PhotoShop and write an action to batch-process them (I can tell you how) or use the aforementioned ACDSee to resize them.
