Since I don't see anything at all I didn't even realise I was missing anything until I went to www.apple.com/trailers and I saw that pictures of the movies at the top of the screen which I normally see on other computers just weren't there. There's just a big blank area. Any ideas?

When did this start happening? Has it always been like that on your laptop? Try doing what flow79 suggested so you can see where images should be. This sounds kinda wierd to me so I recommend running some type of spyware program like Ad-Aware or Spybot to see if anything wierd is on your system as well as run antivirus to see if anything is messing with you on that end. My way is a bit extreme but I always check all my bases.
I also have problems with my PC not showing certain images. I know they are there, as I've added animated gifs via macromedia and can't see them on IE. I have been through the suggested solution above and have not had any luck. I have turned off my Norton Firewall and this had no effect.
It's strange as I'm able to see some images which have the similar properties to the ones I can't view.
Before I go and reinstall the operating system, would there be any other options I can do which may help.
Thank you

maybe you have "loading images" turned off on internet explorer? in Tools > Internet Options, look at the advanced tab under the "multimedia" section and see if "show pictures" is checked.
