Question

Simple Flash Masking Help Needed

Asked by: bick2000

Hi,

I'm a beginner with flash, but I'm a quick learner. I'm really have a difficulty with what should be an easy masking problem. What i'm trying to do is pretty much the same as the main movie on http://www.ministryofsound.com/home/ website - a flash movie what has a mask that gets larger as you see an image underneath.

The main image is just going to be a jpeg, and the mask image is going to be a logo. I've successfully created a shape tween with a circle (after following http://www.entheosweb.com/Flash/masking.asp tutorial), but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to use a logo as a mask.

I have tried logo as a transparent gif, transparent png, and .eps file, but it always acts as a mask square, never as the logo itself.

Any help on the best way to do this would be so much appreciated, or how you think the example site accomplishes this would be great.

Thanks so much in advance.

ps. I'm not so sure what the difference is between flash library graphics, symbols, ect. are, so if thats key to this problem, any words on that would help out too...

hi, it looks to me as if they're simply masking the image with a circle type shape with a tween and overlaying the logo on top. the logo isin't actually the mask. it overlays the image.

A little more detailed:

Have three layers, one with the image, one above with the mask (which will be only a circle), and one above that with the actual logo (in black colors only, preferably a vector).

Then you just increase the size of the mask so that the image is shown, and after you've done that, you resize the actual logo. This way, it will look like the logo is the mask, but it's actually a image on top of the mask :)

Ok, thanks so much for the help so far... I have a better idea, but still just a little off...

So I have a layer with the background image. Then i have a mask over that layer, with a circle that gets larger, as a shape tween, revealing the image below.

My issue is still this logo. I have imported it successfully as an AI file, and looks good, but there's no motion to it. Should I be able to do a shape tween with the logo, so that it gets bigger with the mask circle? Or does it have to be static?

Thanks for your help!

You should animate it just as you did with the circle. Just make sure you use a Motion Tween on the logo, and keep it as a symbol :)

Cool, I got it to work! Alright, just for reference, here's what I did:

In illustrator, i ended up exporting the logo as a SWF file.
I imported the file into Flash library.
Editing the symbol, i chose, "Break Apart" and it turned it into a vector that I could manipulate.
Then just used a simply motion tween on my mask layer and it worked!

Thanks for the help, although not the exact answer i used, your help really lead me in the right direction...
