What i'd like to check is this: what's the path of the button in question when it's in the 'cart page' - the one marked 'Submit'. I thought i knew, but now i'm not sure

One way to check it is to open the source of the page and check the form action path. That's where the submit button submits the contents of the form. Hope that helps

Notexa, that's exactly what i thought, yet substituting my own has no effect. I wonder if it's down to caching or am i getting the 'CSS sprite' wrong..?

Indeed, this could be your cache.
First off, clean the Joomla cache (in the admin: Tools - Clean cache).
Next, clean the cache of your browser.
Now try again.

All quite strange. I cleared both. This is the (currently test only) new image that should be being used, but it isn't...

Are you sure you replaced it on the right place (so not in the /images folder but in the /templates/wood.../images folder) ?
Or maybe in the template that you extracted somewhere and afterwards copied to you joomla installation ?

Because when I go to http://proteanit.dyndns.org/templates/wood_01_j1_5/images/Button.png I still get the brown button.  I even downloaded it, and still it is brown.  That's why I'm guessing you replaced it on another location.

Thanks for continuing to question me on that - stupid mistake on my part: in order to change the site so you can all see it, i had to change the document root, so i was using the path of the old one. Once again you come to my rescue Notexa :-)
