Ning or Wordpress, need help deciding how to build community site

I need help on deciding which technology should I use to build a community site. I have a main site www.handywise.com, which allow people to find real-time face-to-face advices by connecting with professionals online. However, I want to build some kind of community site for professionals so they can share ideas and all, most of all I want this site to attract more professionals to sign up for www.handywise.com and generate more traffic to the main site. My delimma is, should I use Ning? I heard of their ownership issue. I also read something about a plugin with wordpress MU, however setting up MU requires a lot of work and time, and the on going maintaince can also costs a bit compare to just use Ning. Any thought or suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
