Question

SQL Issues with Microsoft RMS

Asked by: FIFBA

I am having problems with a workgroup network and microsoft RMS(retail management software). The network is all xp pro. There are 4 computers. The main pc hosts the sql database for the RMS program, the other three are clients to the RMS. Lately the main pc has been freezing at random times, never when im actually there in which the Point of sale program on the client machines are given this error message.
Errorr #2147217871
timeout expired

From what ive read online about this error it says to change the connection timeout from 10 to 30 which has been done but not corrected the problem.

Any ideas would be appreciated

The problem is the freeze.  Is the main PC actually locking up and requiring a reboot, or is it just 'hanging' for a while?

If the main PC is requiring reboots, then no timeout value will return the results you are looking for.  Instead, you should be examining the main PC for the cause of the hangs.  Check the Windows Event Log to see if any specific errors are coming up.

Ive ran the pc pretty hard and not had any success of creating it freezing. It just happens randomly whenever it wants. It does require a reboot but im not sure if the pc is frozen or just hung up. She does have norton internet security on there so my next step is going to try to remove that and see what happens but im not to optimistic about that fixing it. I have not see anything in the event viewer that would clue me into why it has frozen.

A few questions first...you are only working with Store Ops and not HQ, correct?  And, are you using SQL 2005 or MSDE?  What version of RMS are you running and what is the exact build number?

Here are a few suggestions that have worked for us in the past:

1) Try changing the Server Name in Administrator on the POS station to the IP address of the server.

2) Ensure the NIC on the POS does not "sleep".

3) Ensure the server is not going to sleep or hibernating.  Some people use the XP box as a Server and never disable these functions.

You should also review the following list too.  Let me know if you have any questions regarding them and I can walk you though any resolution tied to it....

1. A damaged or unreliable cable connection, a failed network adapter, or a failed hub
2. An incorrect network driver or incorrect network settings
3. The installation of an earlier version of MDAC on each workstation than is on the server
4. Energy saving features that turn off the network adapter when Microsoft Dynamics RMS is running
5. An IP address conflict
6. Settings in the Client Network Utility that are configured incorrectly
7. Settings in the Server Network Utility that are configured incorrectly
8. A lack of available network bandwidth because system resources are using all available network bandwidth
9. Incorrect settings for a specific tender type, for a peripheral device, or for a register
10. A wireless network configuration
11. Conflicts with settings for third-party add-ins or for customizations

Best regards,
Chris Birchby
