If you want to do it for free, get a business account in PayPal and use Website Payments Standard. You will not even need an SSL certificate. Create a logo and post it to sslpic.com so it can be displayed in the PayPal page in SSL mode (also free).
Create Pay Now buttons using PayPal's tools or dynamic encrypted buttons (prevents hacking the price in the HTML that redirects the user to PayPal) as discussed in an article I wrote and posted here: How to create dynamic Encrypted Website Payments (EWP) PayPal buttons.
PayPal will send emails to both you and your customer.
If you want to accept credit cards on your own page and hide PayPal, you will need an SSL certificate and can use PayPal Website Payments Pro. You will have to program this, however, using their API interface.
