I need to make a script for Paypal Pro which includes Express Checkout and Direct Payment - both types return responses to the server and those responses need to be handled by the script and then a message displayed to inform the user of whether the transaction was successful or failed.
In both cases this purchase will be for a single item. In the variable called $orderdescription I pass the order ID and some other information relevant to the order. In the $paymentamount I pass the total and the quantity will always be 1.

I have made a sandbox account at paypal and playing with stuff.
I have some questions.. what is difference between Express Checkout and Direct Payment ?

It appears that these two features play together as part of the WebSite Payments Pro solution:

The "Payments Pro", IIRC, facilitates things like taking orders from POS terminals and over the phone.
You're doing the right thing to set up the sandbox and test with it. FWIW, when doing PayPal dev work, I have also had a few $1 items to play with. Once I am pretty sure that I have a process working, I get out of Sandbox and into the "real world" where I process orders for the $1 items. That lets me have one additional level of verification about my process.

I have done with script almost. Script is working with Express Checkout Process.
problem is with Direct payment integration.
I got the following error.
'Detailed Error Message: This transaction cannot be processed due to an invalid merchant configuration.
Short Error Message: Invalid Configuration
Error Code: 10501
Error Severity Code: Error
anybody can help to solve this ?

This and more are described in the PayPal Developer Documentation. If you have a PayPal account, you can access the developer documents through it. There are examples available. I would suggest that if you have an older copy of the Docs, you should download and print the latest ones - I have found that PayPal will update the documentation without updating the date on the reference page (!)
If this seems like a lot of work / study, you may find that the PayPal developer community has developers you can hire to make quick work of these things. May be faster than trying to acquire the knowledge yourself.
