Would we be able to transfer the certificate to a different domain?

No, certificates cannot be transferred.

However, using a company like Godaddy, which regularly has promotions like this: http://www.godaddy.com/Com
The other option (if you have full access to your test environment) is to use a self-signed certificate. It will not be "verified", but it will still encrypt the data as it should. See here for information on performing these steps: http://www.akadia.com/serv
