I am selling registration to a fund-raising golf event. People come to the store and purchase the registration to the event but I need to have a free text area that buyers can enter the name of the other people on their foursome team at the product level.

Yes, that is exactly what I want... BUT... I am stuck using the pricing scheme that goes along with every custom option. I can set the price to be zero... but this is an item that has nothing to do with a price at all... it a text area to enter the team members of the golf foursome. If a price of zero is next to this item, it may appear that all players listed here get in for free.
Hmm that's odd I left them as 0 and there is no price shown, see images.
Do you have a link to the page where they are displaying the price at all?

Hi Matt1237
In the Admin panel after you have logged in, go to
Catalog > Manage Products
and choose the registration. Once that has come up, over on the left hand side towards the bottom choose
<Custom Options>
From there click
<Add New Option>
in the title put something like Name 1 and change the Input Type to <Field>
You can then specify whether the customer is required to enter in the name or not.
Then click <Add New Option> again and repeat the process until you have the four spaces.
