We are using a free solution that is run on Linux 7.0 called ezmlm. It runs from the command line in Linux and can handle 100,000 addresses or more. It can also handle many separate lists and highly configurable with moderators, batch email address additions and much more.
using a dedicated server with qmail running it can send out about 25,000 emails in about 1-1/2 hours

Before replacing Ocean11 Mailing Manager, have you checked the batch size that you are using. If you want to say send a few thousand emails, you should get it to send a few at a time with a pause between each batch.
In view of the problems you had when you sent out 500, I suggest a very small batch size ( eg 10 ) with 1 min pause between batches. This way you can send all the emails with the hour and you can always adjust those figures later. Also, choose an off-peak time to do your sending.
Finally, are you sure that the emails were fully well-formed? Were they correctly configured for HTML? Did you have graphical images to send? What was the total package size per email including any images and other attachments.
